As\u00a0Scream 7<\/a>\u00a0rolls out into theaters this weekend and the reactions aren\u2019t quite stellar, some are lamenting what could\u2019ve been. Before Kevin Williamson became director, this was to be helmed by\u00a0Scream 5\u00a0and\u00a06\u00a0duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, aka Radio Silence. The two had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with their vampire Abigail<\/a>,\u00a0but the pair have dropped some hints about what they\u2019d have done.<\/p>\n

By their own admission, the pair never got their hands on a\u00a0Scream 7\u00a0script, but they had some ideas they wished to follow through on. Bettinelli-Olpin told Entertainment Weekly<\/a> they \u201ctalked a lot about, \u2018How hard can we go with this?\u2019 For us,\u00a0it was always this idea of, [if]\u00a0Scream VI\u00a0is like a secret feel-good movie,\u00a0Scream 7\u2018s going to fuck you up. That was as much as we ever got to.\u201d<\/p>\n

We have an idea of what that\u2019d have entailed: a few months ago, Skeet Ulrich revealed the plan was for Melissa Barrera\u2019s Sam Carpenter to become a Ghostface<\/a> after surviving two attacks in 5\u00a0and\u00a06. Presumably, that would\u2019ve meant some bad times ahead for her sister Sam, the Meeks-Martin twins, and the rest of the would-be victim pool. But along with the Final Girl inversion, it seems that\u2019d have led to a change in scale.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Scream 6] expanded just by going to New York,\u201d acknowledged Gillett, \u201cso the other thing Matt and I talked about was doing the opposite for Scream 7. Like, shrink it down and make it this like ultra-contained, almost continuous, like minute-to-minute thing.\u201d This \u201cstupid idea\u201d was something they thought up without any writer input\u2014but hey, maybe it could\u2019ve been an interesting swing?<\/p>\n
