\n The Screen Actors Guild Awards returned on Sunday evening, complete with a new name<\/a> \u2014 and, for the first time ever, a thematic dress code.\n <\/p>\n

\n Now known as the Actor Awards<\/a>, the annual ceremony\u2019s 32nd edition sent attendees very specific sartorial instructions: \u201cReimagining Hollywood Glamour From the \u201920s and \u201830s.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Some guests took the guidance more literally than others; many appeared to disregard the theme entirely. But there were, nonetheless, plenty of fringes, beaded embellishments and allusions to the jazz age on the red carpet at LA\u2019s Shrine Auditorium.\n <\/p>\n

\n Chase Infiniti, the breakout star of Oscar favorite \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d put a sparkling spin on the period in a sequined Louis Vuitton mermaid gown and matching headpiece. Sheryl Lee Ralph (and her daughter and stylist Ivy Coco Maurice) also wholeheartedly embraced the dress code with a feather boa and a retro finger wave.\n <\/p>\n

\n Elsewhere, vintage Hollywood silhouettes and flapper dresses were reinterpreted in subtle ways, from Odessa A\u2019zion\u2019s shaggy fringed jumpsuit to the glittering drop waist of Rose Byrne\u2019s silk crepe Chanel dress. Kristen Bell, Viola Davis and \u201cThe Pitt\u201d star Supriya Ganesh were among the others successfully capturing the era\u2019s opulence without veering into costume party territory.\n <\/p>\n

\n More artful takes included Teyana Taylor\u2019s showstopping Thom Browne gown, which looked as if it had been painted on the actor\u2019s body \u2014 an optical illusion evoking the \u201ctrompe-l\u2019\u0153il\u201d (or \u201cdeceive the eye\u201d) style popularized by designer Elsa Schiaparelli in the 1920s and 1930s. Demi Moore, meanwhile, turned to Schiaparelli\u2019s namesake label for her plunging look, a plume of polka-dotted tulle billowing out behind her.\n <\/p>\n

\n The theme was arguably harder for the evening\u2019s men. The abundance of double-breasted, rather than single-breasted, jackets arguably channeled a style of suit popular from the 1930s. But the styling \u2014 whether Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u2019s open-collar Prada look or Connor Storrie\u2019s shirtless Saint Laurent one \u2014 remained relatively contemporary.\n <\/p>\n
