The Rolling Stones<\/a> have made themselves indispensable in the realm of live rock music. Never far away from their next tour, some might hate their music, but nobody can deny their on-stage presence and delivery. <\/p>\n Without a doubt, The Rolling Stones have and should be routinely considered one of the best live bands around. Able to fill stadiums and pack out fields, they deliver a ream of rock-ready hits that leave audiences with beaming smiles and happy memories. But, apparently, they don\u2019t quite match up to a troop of monkeys on the stage. <\/p>\n It seems totally unbelievable that the group could be so routinely dumped off the stage and replaced by the primates. But it happened. A time when not only were, arguably, the greatest rock band of all time booed off the stage, but they were replaced by their support act to keep the audience from baying for blood. It just so happens that rather than an up and coming band from the local area, the support act were a group of performing monkeys.<\/p>\n Texas has always had a reputation for being tough. The Lone Star State has managed to traverse deserts and a whole host of unwelcome wildlife to create a handsome abode for its inhabitants. Conservative to the last and deeply staunch in defence of their home, Texans do not suffer fools gladly and made their feelings known when Brian Jones<\/a>, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts came to town as The Rolling Stones.<\/p>\n The Stones\u2019 first trip to San Antonio, Texas, would be memorable for all the wrong reasons. The group was set to perform at the state fair and was accompanied on the bill by Bobby Vee and George Jones, hinting that things would not go the hysterical way of their usual performances back home<\/a>. There\u2019s a good chance that the Stones would be facing an audience who all had guns either at home, in the car or on their person. Not a usual situation. <\/p>\n The band were, according to various reports, but most notably Jack Hutton\u2019s of the Daily Mirror, booed off stage and replaced by a group of trained monkeys who had performed earlier. \u201cLocal singers were cheered wildly,\u201d wrote Hutton, \u201cA tumbling act and a trained monkey were recalled to the stage for encores. But the long-haired Rolling Stones \u2014 Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman \u2014 were booed.\u201d <\/p>\n If you thought only the parents were dismayed by the performance, or that a run of conservative troublemakers had dived into the audience to rattle the band and make a point of depriving the rest of those in attendance, think again. \u200b\u201dAll they\u2019ve got that our own school groups haven\u2019t is hair,\u201d a Texan teen was reported to have said of the Stones. It wasn\u2019t just on stage that the band were vilified; they struggled to escape their unusual appearance in the ultra-conservative state. Other performers on the day were given a fair shout according to Hutton, with many celebrated and championed under the big skies of Texas. But Bill Wyman remembered the event differently in his memoir Stone Alone. \u201cThe concert was in the open air and everyone got a poor reception from a mixed crowd of cowboys and kids,\u201d he wrote.

\u201cWe had to go on after some performing monkeys,\u201d continued Wyman. \u201cWhat the hell were we doing here? People didn\u2019t know whether to take us seriously or as a joke. What had we let ourselves in for? Crowds were great to us at airports and hotels, but these two shows set us back years!\u201d<\/p>\n

The event has been largely forgotten by fans of The Rolling Stones<\/a>, after all, who would expect one of the most subversive pop acts around to really find favour in San Antonio? However, we can\u2019t escape the image of Jagger, Jones and Richards slowly trudging off the stage to a chorus of boos as the Marquis Chimps readied themselves for an unexpected and rapturous encore. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
