{"id":454711,"date":"2026-03-03T04:22:16","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T04:22:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/454711\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T04:22:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T04:22:16","slug":"it-feels-like-little-shards-of-broken-glass-13-year-old-girl-injured-on-new-cycle-lane-surface-as-council-faces-safety-questions-cycling-news-bike-reviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/454711\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cIt feels like little shards of broken glass\u201d: 13-year-old girl injured on new cycle lane surface, as council faces safety questions &#8211; Cycling News | Bike Reviews"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The local MP for Poole, Neil Duncan-Jordan, has written to the council to confirm the safety of the new cycle lane surface, after a 13-year-old girl was injured when she fell\u00a0off her scooter while\u00a0on her way to school.<\/p>\n<p>The family believe that the surface of the newly installed red cycle lane on Ringwood Road was a \u201csignificant factor in the incident\u201d, which left the teenager with a concussion, as well as cuts and bruises on her face.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neil Duncan-Jorden MP wrote to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council on February 13 to verify \u201cwhat quality checks were undertaken before this section was opened\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Ringwood-Road-surface-credit-Rio-Argent-Facebook-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Ringwood Road surface\"\/>Ringwood Road surface (Image Credit: Rio Argent \/ Facebook)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=122202001208304635&amp;set=pcb.122202001280304635\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the letter<\/a>, he said that photographs taken show \u201cdisplaced grit along the route\u201d, which the family believe has contributed \u201cboth to the fall and to the severity of the abrasions sustained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added that he was informed that the matter was reported to the council via the appropriate channels on the day of the incident and marked as urgent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MP also said that he understands that sweeping on the cycleway was seen later that evening, and warning signs relating to the grit were installed shortly afterwards. He said that his constituent is concerned that his work implies an underlying issue with the surface condition of the cycleway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/slips-and-near-misses-new-cycle-lane-317607\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt; Cyclists raise safety concerns after slips and near misses on new cycle lane<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter also mentions concerns from other residents about whether the material had been properly laid and if it meets the required safety standards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a comment on Facebook, Ross Hodder added that \u201cI rode this after the incident, and I think the surface does need looking at as it is not fully bound.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHowever, the cycle track itself is really good and separates cyclists from motor traffic. However bad the injury was, it could have been worse in a collision with a car. No child should be injured on the way to school \u2013 our roads need to be safe for everyone who uses them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst it was reported in the local press as a cycling incident, the posts show that injured girl was actually riding a scooter. It isn\u2019t clear if this was a non-electric scooter, one of Poole\u2019s Beryl hire scooters or a private vehicle, which would not be legal for use on public roads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mother described the incident on Facebook, explaining that her daughter needed hospital treatment for the cuts and grazes, and has a swollen lip and \u201cwhat looks like dental damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She added that: \u201cI appreciate accidents happen, but her injuries quite clearly are much deeper and larger because of this dangerous surface you have laid, that is loose and not at all fixed as I expect it ought to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said that the incident was \u201cevery mother\u2019s nightmare\u201d and because of the concussion, her daughter is out of sport for three weeks, \u201cwhich is her passion in life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/feature\/controversial-cycle-lanes-caused-uproar-locals-311561\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt; These controversial cycle lanes caused uproar \u2014 but what actually happened once infrastructure was installed?<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response, BCP Council told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bournemouthecho.co.uk\/news\/25878970.poole-council-slam-girl-injured-new-cycle-lane\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Bournemouth Echo<\/a> that it acknowledges the formal complaint by Mr Duncan-Jordan and that the team was instructed to take immediate precautionary action to sweep the cycle track and erect a warning sign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Councillor Andy Hadley, BCP Council cabinet member for climate response, environment and energy, said: \u201cOur thoughts are with the young girl who came off her scooter on the Ringwood Road cycle path, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe also acknowledge the receipt of formal complaint, as well as the correspondence we have received from Neil Duncan Jordan MP regarding this incident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe incident was brought to the council\u2019s attention out of hours and the team instructed immediate precautionary action to sweep the cycle track and erect a warning sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tree-cut-down-ringwood-road-during-cycle-lane-works-poole-julia-cutler-facebook-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"Tree cut down on Ringwood Road during cycle lane works, Poole\"\/>Tree cut down on Ringwood Road during cycle lane works, Poole (Image Credit: Farrelly Atkinson)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This route has previously attracted controversy when <a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/locals-fume-10-trees-cut-down-bike-lane-311815\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10 trees were cut down to build the cycleway<\/a>, which opponents described as \u201chypocritical\u201d and \u201cridiculous\u201d.
