{"id":455823,"date":"2026-03-03T19:50:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T19:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/455823\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T19:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T19:50:09","slug":"one-million-more-state-pensioners-will-be-dragged-into-paying-income-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/455823\/","title":{"rendered":"One million more state pensioners will be dragged into paying income tax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tThe freeze in income tax thresholds is set to drag many pensioners into paying it for the first time\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p>One million <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/money\/pensions-and-retirement\/state-pensioner-still-working-tax-hikes-life-impossible-4032880?srsltid=AfmBOooAsvyTi80nA7HUlR4hamh8ALCrNLaSWfo2wiG3dt0YlJY1G9AW&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more pensioners<\/a> than previously predicted will <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/money\/pensions-and-retirement\/state-pensioners-to-pay-over-300-in-income-tax-by-2027-3608629?srsltid=AfmBOooCkdktdIdr4WPZIVM3YUGH2AvMvkzaZVQV_oS0Fe8y2YlbOouK&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pay income tax<\/a> as a result of frozen tax thresholds, the Budget watchdog has predicted.<\/p>\n<p>Economic forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility, published for Chancellor Rachel Reeves\u2019s Spring Statement, estimate that 600,000 more pensioners will be dragged into paying income tax in the next financial year \u2013 2026\/27 \u2013 rising to one million by 2030-31.<\/p>\n<p>The value of the state pension has increased dramatically over the last few years because of the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/jenrick-state-pension-triple-lock-split-farage-4243348?srsltid=AfmBOooHWxk6YyLpRqkQ6BulksB8KC9Er0HQFWz2zoESvZkAQfcC8or4&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">triple lock<\/a> \u2013 which means it rises by the highest of 2.5 per cent, inflation, or wage growth, each year.<\/p>\n<p>New FeatureIn ShortQuick Stories. Same trusted journalism.<\/p>\n<p>Because successive chancellors have frozen the threshold at which people start to pay tax, the value of the state pension will exceed the zero-rate personal allowance from 2027\/28.<\/p>\n<p>As some pensioners have additional income streams, the OBR estimates 600,000 more will start paying tax from the next financial year, beginning in April. <\/p>\n<p>The OBR document does add that \u201cmuch of this population is projected to pay only very small additional amounts of tax due to the freezes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It also says the Government has pledged that those whose only income is the state pension will not pay income tax in this Parliament, but has yet to set out details.<\/p>\n<p>The OBR predicts that pensioners paying income tax will yield around \u00a3100m a year by 2030-31.<\/p>\n<p>The watchdog has not published a breakdown of exactly how many pensioners will be paying income tax by 2031.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tYour next read<\/p>\n<p>        <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/royal-navy-six-ships-shoot-down-missiles-uk-waters-4267989?ico=in-line_link\" title=\"The Royal Navy has six ships that can shoot down missiles \u2013 all are in UK waters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SEI_287572444.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"inews-image image-16-9\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Article thumbnail image\"\/>        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>        \tradio_button_checked<br \/>\nLIVE\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>However, former pensions minister Sir Steve Webb suggested that the figure would be likely to be more than 10 million.
