The second full moon of the year will delight skygazers across large parts of the UK on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n
The first full moon of spring, known as the worm moon, will be most visible from Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, with cloudier conditions expected in the south.<\/p>\n
The Moon appeared red in parts of Asia, Australia, North America and South America earlier on Tuesday as it coincided with a full lunar eclipse \u2013 also known as a blood moon.<\/p>\n
But the worm moon will lose the distinctive colouring as it comes into view across the UK as the eclipse reached totality at around 11.30am on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Dr Ed Bloomer, senior astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, said: \u201cIn the UK, we don\u2019t get to see the eclipse portion.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s below the horizon for us. You get to see the Moon tonight, but you miss the bit where it reddens.\u201d<\/p>\n
The worm moon is thought to take its name from worms who escape from the soil to mate during the spring, he said.<\/p>\n
The blood moon appears red as the Moon lines up with Earth and the sun.<\/p>\n
Light escapes the eclipse and is scattered through Earth\u2019s atmosphere, causing the reddening effect.<\/p>\n
Dr Bloomer said: \u201cThe Earth acts a little bit like a prism. Most light gets blocked out, but some light gets through, but it\u2019s been refracted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dan Suri, chief operational meteorologist at the Met Office, said: \u201cThis evening, skies will be clearest across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere will be some, albeit less extensive and less reliable, clear skies over parts of southern England.<\/p>\n
