{"id":457355,"date":"2026-03-04T16:35:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T16:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/457355\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T16:35:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T16:35:10","slug":"bell-phillips-gets-go-ahead-to-transform-industrial-quarter-in-sweden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/457355\/","title":{"rendered":"Bell Phillips gets go-ahead to transform industrial quarter in Sweden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Gothenburg has approved the vision to retrofit a series of disused factories in the Kulan industrial quarter to create more than 1,000 new homes as well as workspace, leisure facilities and a public park.<\/p>\n<p>Bell Phillips <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/bell-phillips-and-studio-egret-west-unveil-gothenburg-factory-retrofit-masterplan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drew up plans<\/a> for the site in collaboration with Studio Egret West, after the pair won an international design competition organised by Stena Fastigheter, one of Sweden\u2019s largest developers, in early 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Studio Egret West left the project after its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/bell-phillips-and-studio-egret-west-unveil-gothenburg-factory-retrofit-masterplan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">early conceptual stages<\/a>, and Bell Phillips has worked with local Gothenburg architect Liljewall on the current plans.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal reuses the site\u2019s most noteworthy buildings, with many of the existing elevations and steel structures set to become spaces for new retail, dining and commercial functions.<\/p>\n<p>New-build homes will reference the site\u2019s history through their materials and forms, for instance, through saw-tooth roofs.<\/p>\n<p>Since winning the design competition six years ago, the scheme has been modified to remove planned student accommodation and introduce additional green spaces between the housing blocks.<\/p>\n<p>The new neighbourhood will also have urban planting between blocks, while a linear park will run alongside the River Savaen.<\/p>\n<p>Practice director Tim Bell said: \u2018For Bell Phillips, our first international project is a major milestone, and it has been a pleasure to work alongside our client <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stenafastigheter.se\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stena Fastigheter<\/a>, partner architects Liljewall and Studio Egret West, in such a productive collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are now looking forward to commencing technical preparation ahead of construction, and to seeing Gothenburg\u2019s new quarter taking shape over the coming years.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Stena Fastigheter chief executive officer Cecilia Fasth said: \u2018We have been inspired by Bell Phillips\u2019 work in transforming historic industrial areas into vibrant neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That experience has been important in shaping Kulan as an open and welcoming part of Gothenburg.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Construction is expected to begin in late 2027, with the first residents and commercial tenants scheduled to move in around 2029.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-818287\" class=\"size-full wp-image-818287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bell-phillips-gothenburg-scheme-evolution-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1678\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-818287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Evolution of the proposals: early designs from 2021 (left);
