The slasher sequel\u00a0Scream 7\u00a0took a bumpy road to production, losing some cast members and directors along the way, but it has now made its way out into the world. The reaction is split (you can read a 5\/10 review from Tyler Nichols HERE<\/a> and an 8\/10 second opinion review from Mike Conway at THIS LINK<\/a>), but the box office is good, with the film setting the record for the highest opening weekend of the franchise.<\/p>\n

Kevin Williamson, who wrote the screenplay for the original\u00a0Scream, directs the film from a screenplay by 2022\u2019s\u00a0Scream\u00a0and\u00a0Scream VI\u00a0writer Guy Busick, who crafted the story with his co-writer on the fifth and sixth films, James Vanderbilt. (Vanderbilt is also a producer on the most recent sequels.)\u00a0Williamson also did enough work on the script to earn a \u201cscreenplay by\u201d credit alongside Busick. He recently sat down for a SPOILER-filled interview with Esquire<\/a> \u2013 and during that interview, he revealed that there was a deleted coda that would have confirmed that a character who is said to be dead was actually alive. So watch out, there will be SPOILERS below.<\/p>\n

Cast and Synopsis<\/p>\n

Returning franchise heroine Neve Campbell<\/a>\u00a0is joined in the cast by Isabel May of the\u00a0Yellowstone\u00a0prequel\u00a01883, who\u00a0has signed on to play Sidney\u2019s daughter Tatum; Mckenna Grace of the\u00a0Ghostbusters\u00a0franchise, Grace\u2019s\u00a0Ghostbusters\u00a0co-star Celeste O\u2019Connor,\u00a0Gen V\u2018s Asa Germann,\u00a0The Fabelmans\u2018 Sam Rechner,\u00a0Pitch Perfect\u2018s Anna Camp,\u00a0Riverdale\u2018s Mark Consuelos, fellow franchise star Courteney Cox, who reprises the role of reporter \/ author Gale Weathers, Joel McHale (Community) as Sidney\u2019s husband Mark Evans, and Ethan Embry (The Devil\u2019s Candy). Although two of the \u201ccore four\u201d characters established in the previous two movies are no longer around, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown are back as Chad Meeks-Martin and Mindy Meeks-Martin.<\/p>\n

Also in the cast are Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, who played\u00a0Ghostface killers<\/a>\u00a0in the original\u00a0Scream\u00a0and\u00a0Scream 3, respectively, and did not appear to make it out of those movies alive. David Arquette is back as the dearly departed Dewey, who exited the world of the living in the fifth movie.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the film\u2019s official synopsis:\u00a0When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter (Isabel May) becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.<\/p>\n

Scream 7\u00a0earned an R rating with strong bloody violence, gore, and language.<\/p>\n

SPOILERS<\/p>\n

The mystery at the heart of the film is whether or not Matthew Lillard\u2019s character Stu Macher really died at the end of the original film or if he somehow survived and is now coming after Sidney again. In the end, it\u2019s said that the video calls Sidney was receiving from Stu were just AI deepfakes created by another maniac. Stu is dead.<\/p>\n

But, during his Esquire interview, Williamson said they did shoot a coda that would have revealed that Stu actually was alive all along. <\/p>\n

Williamson told Esquire, \u201cI went to game night at Mike Flanagan\u2019s house and Lillard was there. I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh shit, he\u2019s going to ask me.\u2019 And the whole evening he was just like, \u2018You\u2019ve got to bring Stu back, man. You got to bring Stu back.\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018What do I tell him?\u2019 My husband goes, \u2018Just tell him.\u2019 I was like, \u2018No, I\u2019m not.\u2019 And he kept going on and on about it. Finally I said, \u2018Listen, Stu\u2019s dead. It will make no sense whatsoever if he\u2019s alive. And I do not want to do that to this franchise. I do not want to jump the shark in that big a way. I\u2019ll jump one shark, but I\u2019m not going to jump ten sharks.\u2019 He goes, \u2018All right, bro, forgive me.\u2019 And in my head I\u2019m going, \u2018Oh shit, I lied to him.\u2019 But then I realized I didn\u2019t lie to him because \u2026 he\u2019s not alive.\u201c<\/p>\n

He went on to say, \u201cGuy Busick had that in his script. He wrote all the AI stuff. The first time I read it I was like, \u2018How is this going to work? How is he going to be alive?\u2019 Furthermore, if it is AI, will part of the audience be disappointed that he\u2019s not real? We were playing that game. And I\u2019d be lying if I said we didn\u2019t shoot it both ways. \u2026 We shot a little coda at the end that we had in our back pocket. But oddly enough, the decision was that the audience wanted him dead.\u201c<\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re disappointed that we didn\u2019t get a \u201cStu is alive\u201d coda, blame the test screening audiences. \u201cIt makes more sense. It\u2019s more real. If he\u2019s alive, that\u2019s a big stretch. We live in a world now where with fake AI, we know that\u2019s possible.\u201c<\/p>\n
