We were all a bit shocked when LEGO Horizon Adventures<\/a> was announced<\/a>, and not because the game itself was a surprise, but because of the platforms it was coming to.<\/p>\n

Co-developed by Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo, the plastic action platformer was released simultaneously on PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n

Obviously, making the game for Switch makes some sense given its younger-skewing audience, but developing first-party titles for other platforms is not something Sony is in the habit of, outside of some rare exceptions.<\/p>\n

Well, according to the reputable Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly, who has made a name for himself interviewing countless developers over the years, it wasn’t Sony’s choice to put the game on Switch.<\/p>\n

He responds<\/a> to another user, explaining that it isn’t an educated guess; “it’s info I know,” he says, adding that “Sony views Nintendo as direct competition.”<\/p>\n

So, it sounds as though Sony put LEGO Horizon Adventures on Switch because it had to; it seems LEGO itself is behind that move.<\/p>\n

In a weird hypothetical where the company wasn’t involved with the game at all, Sony probably would’ve released the game on PS5 first and then PC later, and that would be that.<\/p>\n

In hindsight it’s a fairly obvious detail, but an interesting one all the same.<\/p>\n

We expect Sony will be more careful about this sort of thing going forward, as it now appears to be backing away<\/a> from releasing its first-party software on other platforms.<\/p>\n

LEGO Horizon was a special case as that was apparently ordered by LEGO, and we imagine MLB The Show will continue to launch on all platforms. That’s also mandated by the license holder, of course.<\/p>\n

Aside from that, though, it really does seem like Sony is going to hunker down and just keep its PS Studios games to its own system.<\/p>\n
