Step away from your Apple iPhone and Android devices<\/a>, Jolla is a new smartphone, designed to shake up the market, and tempt people away from Big Tech \u2013 and it\u2019s already proving very popular.<\/p>\n

Apple is currently the world\u2019s largest smartphone company, having recently taken the crown from Samsung<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But for those looking for an alternative, there are options out there, like the productivity-focused Clicks Communicator<\/a> or this super high-tech robot phone<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And if you\u2019re after something completely different, then the Linux-based Jolla might be for you.<\/p>\n

The Jolla smartphone offers an alternative to Apple and Android devices<\/p>\n

When it comes to smartphone operating systems, it\u2019s pretty much a two-horse race between Apple\u2019s iOS and Google\u2019s Android.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But Jolla is offering an actual alternative, in the form of Sailfish OS, which uses Linux instead.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The smartphone is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7100 5G chip and comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which can be extended via a microSD card.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Its AMOLED screen measures 6.36 inches, and it features two main cameras on the rear as well as one on the front.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Outwardly, it doesn\u2019t look too dissimilar to any other smartphone on the market, but its creators say that what makes it stand out is the fact that it doesn\u2019t run on iOS or Android.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jolla Mobile\u2019s CEO Sami Pienim\u00e4ki told Wired<\/a> that \u2018people want to go away from Big Tech\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But shunning the larger operating systems does come with a potential hiccup, and Jolla might not be able to run certain apps.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, Pienim\u00e4ki explained that there is a way around that, and when you\u2019re setting up the phone, you\u2019ll be asked if you want to install some open source software.<\/p>\n

Doing so will allow you to run Google services without needing a Google device.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jolla was previewed in December last year and has already pulled in more than 10,000 pre-orders, with deliveries set to start in late June.<\/p>\n

But the new phone does come with a bit of a catch <\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve read the above and like the sounds of the new smartphone, then we do have a bit of bad news for you.<\/p>\n

Jolla Mobile is based in Finland, and the phone is currently only set to go on sale in Europe with a price tag of \u20ac649 (around $750). <\/p>\n

\u201cEuropeans want more European technology,\u201d Pienim\u00e4k told Wired.<\/p>\n

Alongside that, the phone doesn\u2019t yet have Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval. <\/p>\n

However, Pienim\u00e4k said the company is considering a separate US launch later down the line, but for now, it\u2019s focusing its efforts on Europe.<\/p>\n
