{"id":461169,"date":"2026-03-06T18:31:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T18:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/461169\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T18:31:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T18:31:22","slug":"maggies-exhibition-at-va-dundee-shows-how-buildings-can-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/461169\/","title":{"rendered":"Maggie&#8217;s exhibition at V&#038;A Dundee shows &#8220;how buildings can care&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/exhibitions-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exhibition<\/a> of the 30-year history of charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/maggies-centres\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maggie&#8217;s<\/a> and its cancer care centres has opened at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/va-dundee\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">V&amp;A Dundee<\/a>, displaying original models and drawings by world-famous architects, including the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/frank-gehry\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frank Gehry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/eventsguide\/2026\/03\/maggies-architecture-that-cares\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maggie&#8217;s: Architecture That Cares<\/a> opened today in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2018\/09\/12\/va-dundee-museum-kengo-kuma-design-scotland-architecture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kengo Kuma-designed V&amp;A museum<\/a> in Dundee, with architectural objects detailing the more than 30 Maggie&#8217;s Centres built in the UK and internationally.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303122 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maggies-architetcure-that-cares-va-dundee_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Maggie's: Architecture That Cares exhibiton at V&amp;A Dundee\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An exhibition celebrating the history of Maggie&#8217;s Centres has opened at the V&amp;A Dundee<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maggies.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maggie&#8217;s<\/a> charity has commissioned some of the world&#8217;s most famous architects to design buildings that provide support to cancer patients and their families in a more homely setting than a typical hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Among the pieces in the exhibition, which is on display until 1 November, are models and drawings of centres designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/norman-foster\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Norman Foster<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/zaha-hadid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zaha Hadid<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/richard-rogers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Rogers<\/a> and the local Dundee Maggie&#8217;s Centre by Frank Gehry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303123 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maggies-architetcure-that-cares-va-dundee_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Maggie's: Architecture That Cares exhibiton at V&amp;A Dundee\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It aims to showcase the charity&#8217;s belief that well-designed architecture can create a sense of care<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope that this is a catalyst for a conversation that design should be at centre stage,&#8221; Maggie&#8217;s CEO Laura Lee told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This exhibition helps expose to people how design can care and how buildings can care \u2013 there&#8217;s not enough conversation around it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303116 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maggies-architetcure-that-cares-va-dundee_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x609.jpg\" alt=\"Architecture model at the V&amp;A\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1689\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Architectural models by some of the centre&#8217;s architects are on display<\/p>\n<p>As a nod to Maggie&#8217;s requirement that centres be designed around the kitchen table, an eight-metre-long table features at the centre of the exhibition space, displaying over 20 architectural models.<\/p>\n<p>On one wall of the exhibition, pine plywood boards divide photos and drawings into five themes that reference factors in Maggie&#8217;s design brief for its centres \u2013 welcome, beauty, home, nature and choice.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303120 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maggies-architetcure-that-cares-va-dundee_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Architecture models and drawings on display at V&amp;A Dundee\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An eight metre-long table in the exhibition references the kitchen table in Maggie&#8217;s design brief<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve taken some key themes from the [Maggie&#8217;s] brief and shown how lots of the different centres achieve it,&#8221; said V&amp;A Dundee senior curator Meredith More.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a wee bit risky showing them together like this, but we&#8217;re not comparing and contrasting,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;We&#8217;re showing that there are infinite responses to this stimulus, and it can go on and on because the starting point is so strong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully it will also show that if more buildings in our public sector had these core principles, we would all be living, working and moving through better buildings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/01\/30\/laura-lee-maggies-centres-architecture-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sq-laura-lee-maggies-centre-interview_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Maggie's CEO Laura Lee\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> &#8220;Interest in architecture has diminished in the public eye&#8221; says Maggie&#8217;s CEO Laura Lee\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Along another wall, plywood boards display objects detailing the early years of Maggie&#8217;s. These include sketches by Scottish writer, artist and garden designer Maggie Keswick Jencks, who co-founded the charity with her husband, architecture critic Charles Jencks, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Keswick Jencks shared her vision for homely cancer care centres with oncology nurse Lee before passing away in 1995, a year before the first Maggie&#8217;s Centre was completed in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p>Lee and Jencks worked together for decades to continue Maggie&#8217;s legacy until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/10\/14\/charles-jencks-dead-obituary-architect-critic-maggies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jencks&#8217;s death in 2019<\/a>. Now, as Maggie&#8217;s CEO, Lee wants to further spread the charity&#8217;s ethos of the importance of architecture in influencing people&#8217;s wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303124 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maggies-architetcure-that-cares-va-dundee_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Maggie's: Architecture That Cares exhibiton at V&amp;A Dundee\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Pine plywood was used to mount wall displays<\/p>\n<p>As evidenced in the variety of models and drawings on display, each architect who has designed a Maggie&#8217;s Centre has a different response to the same brief.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you go around the exhibition, yes, you look at the models of the physical objects, but what you&#8217;ll see demonstrated is every detail that comes together to create that feeling of a place that cares,&#8221; said Lee.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s interesting, the variety of the different buildings, yet how they welcome people in and how they make people feel is consistent,&#8221; Lee continued. &#8220;We don&#8217;t have to have homogeneity in the design process to get consistency of care.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303127 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maggies-architetcure-that-cares-va-dundee_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Model of Frank Gehry's Maggie's Centre\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Among the pieces on display is a paper model by Frank Gehry<\/p>\n<p>At the entrance to the exhibition, a curved curtain encloses a video section, which plays interviews with people who have been regular visitors to Maggie&#8217;s Centres.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, a seating nook informed by a similar space in a Maggie&#8217;s Centre was added to the gallery, designed as a calming space for visitors who may be affected by cancer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know there will be people who come who are right in it, who will have lost somebody or are holding on to their own stories, so we&#8217;ve borrowed some things from the Maggie&#8217;s ethos,&#8221; said V&amp;A Dundee director Leonie Bell.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The nook was designed directly out of a Maggie&#8217;s building,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;It&#8217;s enclosed, you can sit in a comfy chair to create calm again. The way we&#8217;re using the space is a little different for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303125 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maggies-architetcure-that-cares-va-dundee_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x609.jpg\" alt=\"Seating space at V&amp;A Dundee\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1689\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A seating nook was created as a space for calm reflection<\/p>\n<p>The latest Maggie&#8217;s Centres to be built include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/12\/16\/maggies-northampton-stephen-marshall-architects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Northampton centre<\/a>, which features an angular metal roof designed by Stephen Marshall Architects, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/02\/02\/maggies-centre-royal-free-studio-libeskind-london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a curving centre in London designed by Studio Libeskind<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/01\/30\/laura-lee-maggies-centres-architecture-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In an interview with Dezeen<\/a> last year, Lee spoke about how public interest in architecture has diminished in recent decades.<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantanderson.me\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grant Anderson<\/a> courtesy of V&amp;A Dundee.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/eventsguide\/2026\/03\/maggies-architecture-that-cares\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maggie&#8217;s: Architecture That Cares<\/a> takes place from 6 March to 1 November 2026 at the V&amp;A Dundee.
