The four-day workweek adopted in some government executive offices may not be suitable for private companies, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) said Saturday.<\/p>\n
TUCP spokesperson Carlos Miguel O\u00f1ate said the arrangement depends on the circumstances of each enterprise and cannot be imposed across all industries.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe four-day workweek is not a \u2018one-size-fits-all [fix].\u2019 It always depends on the circumstances of the enterprise, which is why we keep saying it cannot be made mandatory,\u201d he said in a mix of Filipino and English in a radio interview.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis should always be subject to agreement between labor and management. It also depends on the type of industry involved. It cannot be applied to labor-intensive industries like manufacturing and construction,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
O\u00f1ate noted that in the private sector, the four-day workweek is usually practiced in office-based jobs, with four days onsite and one day work-from-home.<\/p>\n
He added that government offices providing frontline services should not adopt a four-day workweek.<\/p>\n
O\u00f1ate also raised concerns about workers under a \u201cno-work, no-pay\u201d arrangement, saying complications could arise if a four-day workweek is implemented.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they are suddenly and unilaterally included in a four-day workweek, it could result in a reduction in their benefits and salaries,\u201d he said in Filipino.<\/p>\n
He stressed that workers must still be paid overtime if their work exceeds eight hours a day.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you work more than eight hours \u2014 for example, 10 hours a day within a four-day workweek \u2014 the extra two hours should be considered overtime and paid accordingly,\u201d O\u00f1ate said in Filipino.<\/p>\n
