{"id":462911,"date":"2026-03-07T17:05:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-07T17:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/462911\/"},"modified":"2026-03-07T17:05:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T17:05:11","slug":"im-available-for-discussion-kevin-pietersen-puts-himself-up-for-england-role-england-cricket-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/462911\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I\u2019m available for discussion\u2019: Kevin Pietersen puts himself up for England role | England cricket team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kevin Pietersen has said he would \u201cabsolutely\u201d consider becoming part of a future England cricket coaching set-up and revealed Rob Key has \u00adpreviously sounded him out a couple of times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While Brendon McCullum, along with managing director Key, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/mar\/06\/brendon-mccullum-poised-to-stay-on-as-ecb-backs-england-head-coach\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expected to get the \u00adbacking of the\u00a0\u00adEngland and Wales Cricket Board<\/a>\u00a0to continue despite a \u00adwinter of overall discontent, it is \u00adunderstood\u00a0that there is room to tweak the\u00a0\u00adcoaching group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cRob Key has mentioned it on a couple of occasions, but we\u2019ve never really got to that position where it\u2019s like: \u2018OK, what should we do here?\u2019\u201d said Pietersen, who won the Ashes and T20 World Cup with England. \u201cIf Rob Key called me and said: \u2018I want to talk to you properly,\u2019 then I\u2019ll talk to him, definitely. I\u2019m available to have the discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pietersen, who was \u00adspeaking before England\u2019s T20 World Cup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/mar\/05\/india-hold-off-brave-england-and-briliant-bethell-to-reach-t20-world-cup-final\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">semi-final defeat<\/a> by India on behalf of the International Cricket \u00adCouncil\u2019s official accommodation partner, \u00adMarriott Bonvoy, is a mentor for Delhi Capitals in the upcoming Indian\u00a0\u00adPremier League and is enthusiastic about working with household names and homegrown talents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">His fellow Ashes 2005 \u00adteammate Marcus Trescothick holds the \u00adposition of England men\u2019s batting coach and has been a key figure during McCullum\u2019s four-year tenure. During the recent 4-1 Ashes defeat, Trescothick was duly rolled out in press conferences to defend England\u2019s aggressive tactics with the bat. Pietersen has been a vocal critic of the approach in Test cricket but is seemingly keen to get his hands dirty and help out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI would absolutely look at it in the longest form of the game and try to help these guys understand that there is a way that you can play,\u201d said\u00a0Pietersen. \u201cTactically, you\u2019ve got to understand the situation. I know I\u2019ve got all the\u00a0credentials. I know I do. I\u2019ve worn every single T-shirt. I\u2019ve failed. I\u2019ve won. I\u2019ve done everything in the game and I would never, ever not look at helping England out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Looking back at the Ashes defeat, Pietersen believes that England could have made the Test matches a lot closer. \u201cIn the shortest form of the game, sure, play without fear, go out there, be brave, be reckless, be careless, be whatever you want. In Test match cricket, you cannot do that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI did it at times, yes, and I learnt. I also knew my responsibility of \u00admaking sure that in certain situations, in a lot of situations, I defended that ball straight. I hit back at the stumps for a long time in my career. I didn\u2019t run down the wicket against Australia\u2019s fastest bowlers and try and slog them for six first ball! I knew my limitations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cYou\u2019ve got to build an innings. I built innings in Test match cricket.
