People in the Falkland Islands have said Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor\u2019s disgrace has caused embarrassment in the very place where he had been considered a hero. The former prince<\/a> fought during Argentina\u2019s attempted invasion of the British overseas territory<\/a> in the South Atlantic in 1982 as a sub-lieutenant and Sea King helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy<\/a> aboard HMS Invincible. King Charles III\u2019s brother flew front-line missions, acting as a decoy for Exocet missiles.<\/p>\n Alistair Jacobson, who has run The Victory pub in Stanley with his wife, Cathy, 67, for more than 40 years, told the Express: \u201cI\u2019ve never heard anybody talk about him [lately]; [he’s become a] bit of an embarrassment, really.\u201d<\/p>\n The landlord was there when the future Duke of York opened Mount Pleasant Airport in 1985. \u201cI think the whole town went there to see the opening of the airport,\u201d Mr Jacobson said.<\/p>\n He added, regarding Andrew\u2019s life since then: \u201cHe just got caught out, didn\u2019t he?\u201d Cathy added: \u201cTo be fair, he doesn\u2019t come up in conversation very often.<\/p>\n READ MORE: ‘Desperate Fergie will show her true colours \u2013 and Meghan should be worried’ <\/a><\/p>\n READ MORE: Picture ‘shows Princess Beatrice with alleged Chinese spy’ <\/a><\/p>\n Cathy and Alistair run The Victory pub (Image: Jonathan Buckmaster)<\/p>\n \u201cI think he\u2019s been silly; he\u2019s been a real fool to himself, but did he know what he was like when he met this fellow [Epstein]?<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a shame. I feel sorry for the royals now, William and Catherine, the ones that are not guilty of any of this.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re getting dragged down as well, which is a shame.\u201d<\/p>\n Coleen Biggs, 75, a volunteer at the islands\u2019 museum, who moved from London to the Falklands in 2002, said: \u201cI think we should remember that he hasn\u2019t actually been convicted of crimes.<\/p>\n \u201cI think we should bear that in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n If he were, she added, \u201che should suffer the same sort of punishment as any other member of the public\u201d.<\/p>\n When asked if some people still had warm feelings about him on the islands, Ms Biggs said: \u201cI think so.<\/p>\n \u201cBut, of course, mention of him has been removed from various official places, because it would cause the wrong sort of reaction.\u201d<\/p>\n *** Ensure our latest news headlines always appear at the top of your Google Search by making us a Preferred Source.
