The UK\u2019s largest cities \u2013 the likes of London<\/a>, Glasgow<\/a>, Manchester<\/a>, etcetera \u2013 tend to hog the spotlight when it comes to places to visit. But good things often come in small packages, and there are many great cities across the country that are far more compact and less crowded than their larger counterparts, with an equally stellar line up of cultural and culinary offerings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With that in mind, the\u00a0Telegraph has ranked Britain\u2019s 20 smallest cities from\u00a0worst to best, based on how much they offer visitors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In last place was the capital of Cornwall, Truro.\u00a0The Telegraph<\/a>\u00a0gave Cornwall\u2019s only city a score of four out of 10. It said that the\u00a0place \u2018is not a looker\u2019 and is more of a \u2018pit stop\u2019 for exploring the rest of\u00a0the region\u2019s beauty than a destination in\u00a0itself.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

We\u2019d argue that\u00a0Truro is absolutely worth a visit. In fact, it\u2019s one of\u00a0Time Out\u2019s\u00a0top places to visit in Cornwall<\/a>. Its centrepiece is the stunning gothic revival cathedral, which was built between 1880 and 1910, and is one of just three cathedrals in all of Britain to have three spires.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve had a good wander around the cathedral,\u00a0make a beeline for\u00a0to Lemon Street Market to\u00a0browse a bunch of\u00a0independent boutiques or grab a coffee at the cute Fig Cafe. If you\u2019re a fan of digging around in second-hand shops, it\u2019s worth paying a visit to\u00a0Enjoy Clothing<\/a>, one of Truro\u2019s most beloved vintage stores. For a\u00a0spectacular\u00a0meal out , book a table at the Michelin-recommended\u00a0Petty Fours<\/a>, which opened in 2025 and sits\u00a0in the cathedral\u2019s shadow.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re after more history and culture,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0the\u00a0Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery<\/a>\u00a0(formerly Royal Cornwall Museum).\u00a0The 200-year-old museum\u00a0reopened after a major refurb last year with a brand new art gallery housing more than\u00a0500 pieces dating from the 1300s to the modern day. That\u2019s in addition to its huge collection\u00a0of minerals from Cornwall\u2019s mining industry and its vast collection of artefacts from ancient civilisations.\u00a0And at the\u00a0Hall For Cornwall<\/a>, you can catch touring shows, contemporary dance performances and music and comedy gigs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of course, we can\u2019t talk about Truro without mentioning Poldark. For anyone that has been enamoured by the Cornish scenery and Aidan Turner\u2019s brooding looks on the\u00a0Poldark\u00a0TV show, there\u2019s a\u00a0tour that begins at Truro harbour and takes visitors to several key locations from the story.
