data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">prevent injury<\/a> entirely, as running is such an impact sport, but you\u2019re improving the tendons and emevuu60\">\u201cEstablishing a good strength base in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a20792704\/how-to-train-in-the-off-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a20792704\/how-to-train-in-the-off-season\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"off-season\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">off-season<\/a> is optimal because when you\u2019re not actively training for races, there\u2019s not as much strain on your muscles from running more mileage and competing,\u201d says Jones.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Plus, from a practical perspective, when you\u2019re not spending as much time running, you theoretically should have more time to lift. \u201cThat being said, if you\u2019re getting into a training block and having been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a20805692\/strength-training-exercises-for-runners\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a20805692\/strength-training-exercises-for-runners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength training\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength training<\/a>, don\u2019t worry too much about when you\u2019re doing it and just do it,\u201d Jones says, noting that it\u2019s better to start late than to not start at all.<\/p>\n<p>Work Your Entire Body<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Running might seem lower-body-specific, but it incorporates your upper half, too\u2014and so should your resistance training. \u201cRunning is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a41781123\/full-body-10-minute-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a41781123\/full-body-10-minute-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"full-body cardio workout\" data-node-id=\"20.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">full-body cardio workout<\/a>,\u201d says Beck. \u201cSome of the muscles undergo repeated use and stress\u2014like the quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, glutes, and hip flexors\u2014but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a43795484\/deep-core-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a43795484\/deep-core-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"core\" data-node-id=\"20.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">core<\/a> is important, for rotational power, and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a63936072\/arm-swing-form-for-runners\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a63936072\/arm-swing-form-for-runners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"arms\" href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a64150769\/what-is-running-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a64150769\/what-is-running-economy\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"running economy\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">running economy<\/a> in a 2019 study in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/journal\/sports\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/journal\/sports\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Sports\" data-node-id=\"21.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sports<\/a>. Researchers suggested that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a43459816\/dumbbell-core-strengthening-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a43459816\/dumbbell-core-strengthening-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strengthening the core muscles\" data-node-id=\"21.5\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strengthening the core muscles<\/a> and upper body with strength endurance training could help offset those negative effects.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Jones recommends making each strength session a full-body one. \u201cIf you have a leg-only day, you\u2019re going to create more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a64577331\/fatigue-resistance-tips-for-long-runs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a64577331\/fatigue-resistance-tips-for-long-runs\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"fatigue\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fatigue<\/a> and your legs will be hurting more on your next run,\u201d he explains. Plus, when all three weekly strength workouts are full-body, if you miss one, you\u2019ve still hit all your muscles for the week.<\/p>\n<p>Related StorySchedule Your Workouts Right<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Two to three strength sessions a week is ideal, and you can do them on run days or not, depending on what works for your routine and your goals, says Beck: \u201cAlternating run and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a39992177\/nell-rojas-strength-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a39992177\/nell-rojas-strength-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength workouts\" data-node-id=\"25.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength workouts<\/a> throughout the week might be more conducive to your goals if you\u2019re training for a longer distance,\u201d she says. \u201cThose who are running with a goal of a few miles or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a44927196\/5k-training-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a44927196\/5k-training-plan\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"5K\" data-node-id=\"25.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">5K<\/a>, on the other hand, would be fine to incorporate both modalities in the same day. It really depends on your goals and how you\u2019re feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">When tackling both a run and strength on the same day, Jones recommends spacing them out by several hours so you don\u2019t feel fatigued going into either.<\/p>\n<p>Go Beyond Bodyweight<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Doing loads and loads of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/g23341982\/best-bodyweight-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/g23341982\/best-bodyweight-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bodyweight exercises\" data-node-id=\"28.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bodyweight exercises<\/a> is the biggest mistake Jones sees runners make with their strength training. \u201cEstablishing a base can start with bodyweight exercises, but you need to build from that,\u201d he says. \u201cIf we\u2019re looking at getting a base going in only four, five, six weeks, you want to get the most bang for your buck. The bodyweight stuff won\u2019t get you as much as you need in that amount of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Find the Ideal Weight<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">When you\u2019re figuring out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a63573897\/weight-training-runners\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a63573897\/weight-training-runners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"how much weight\" data-node-id=\"30.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">how much weight<\/a> you can lift for each move, aim for enough that the last couple reps are tough but not impossible, says Jones; aim for an RPE of around 7 on a scale of 1 to 10 for those final reps. \u201cYou want the load to be good enough that it\u2019s a bit of a struggle but you\u2019re not sacrificing form\u2014quality over quantity is always a good rule to go by,\u201d says Jones.<\/p>\n<p>Related StoryConsider Hiring a Pro<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Working with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a37112268\/running-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a37112268\/running-coach\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"running coach\" data-node-id=\"33.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">running coach<\/a> who specializes in strength can help you zero in on a plan aligned with your goals.
