While Rachel Reeves spent considerable time emphasising a brighter economic outlook, there was little in the way of immediate relief for working households.

Wages may have risen, but so too have taxes, childcare costs, housing and everyday bills. Frozen tax thresholds mean more people are drifting into higher tax bands, even when their real income has barely changed.

Many professionals and working families are feeling stuck. They are earning decent salaries on paper, yet still living from pay cheque to pay cheque, widening the gap between what they will need in retirement and what they have saved.

These are the households that fall into an uncomfortable middle ground. Too wealthy to qualify for meaningful financial support, but not wealthy enough to feel financially secure.

This is the middle-class squeeze.

Against this backdrop, saving meaningful sums can start to feel impossible. The milestone of building your first £10,000 in savings begins to look increasingly out of reach.

Yet this first £10,000 is often cited as the hardest financial milestone to achieve while also being one of the most transformative. Once savings reach five figures, progress tends to accelerate. Investment returns start to really deliver, compounding starts to play a larger role and the financial habits required to build wealth are already in place.

The problem is that building the discipline and awareness needed to reach that point can feel overwhelming. Which is why I recently began experimenting with an unlikely ally in the process: artificial intelligence.

The experiment was simple.

I downloaded three months of bank statements from all our household accounts, including credit cards. After removing sensitive information I uploaded the transactions to ChatGPT and asked it to act as a financial coach with one specific goal.

I wanted to save £10,000 within a year. That works out at roughly £833 a month. I asked the tool to analyse our spending and identify exactly where that money could come from.

What surprised me most was how practical the response was.

• How I’m preparing my teenagers for unemployment

Not once did the AI offer the usual vague advice about giving up coffee or skipping avocado on toast. Instead, it broke down our spending into categories and began identifying patterns that were not immediately obvious when looking at individual transactions.

The overwhelming conclusion was lifestyle creep.

Like many households, we had accumulated a collection of small monthly payments that had become part of the background noise of our finances. Streaming services, apps, memberships and online tools had built up over time. Individually they seemed insignificant, but together they represented a surprisingly large monthly cost.

Then there were the spending “leaks”.

These were small, frequent transactions that feel harmless in isolation. A takeaway here, a quick online purchase there. But when grouped together over a month, they added up to meaningful sums.

Finally, there were the fixed costs.

Insurance policies, broadband contracts and certain household services had been renewing year after year. In several cases we were quite literally paying the price of loyalty. A quick phone call and the threat of switching providers resulted in lower prices almost immediately.

None of this was particularly glamorous. But it was effective.

The real value of the exercise, however, was the structure the AI suggested.

Spending cuts are helpful, but the real power comes from guaranteeing the saving before the money has a chance to disappear elsewhere. The tool recommended automating a transfer of £833 into a separate savings account immediately after payday, forcing us to adjust spending around what remained.

• How do I teach my adult son budgeting skills?

It also calculated a daily discretionary spending amount for smaller purchases. Any ad hoc treats had to fit within that limit.

Suddenly the £10,000 target began to look achievable.

None of this advice was revolutionary. But the speed and clarity with which the analysis was produced made the process far easier than manually reviewing hundreds of transactions.

For households feeling squeezed by rising costs, this is where AI may prove unexpectedly useful.

Many people struggle not with financial knowledge but with financial organisation. They know they should budget, track spending and automate savings. The difficulty is finding the time and discipline to do it consistently.

AI tools can do much of that heavy lifting in minutes.

That does not mean AI should replace judgment. Bank statements contain sensitive financial information and should only be shared with trusted tools. But as a way of gaining visibility over where money is actually going, the technology is remarkably effective.

The middle-class squeeze is unlikely to disappear any time soon. Tax thresholds remain frozen, housing costs are high and everyday bills continue to rise. For many families, increasing income is not always an immediate option.

That makes control over spending more important than ever.

Saving your first £10,000 may still be the hardest step. But with the right systems, and perhaps a little help from artificial intelligence, it may be less daunting than it first appears.

You would be forgiven for feeling underwhelmed after listening to the chancellor deliver the spring statement last week.…

[20
554,733,4308,86,56,54,55
0":"post-467567","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-artificial-intelligence","8":"tag-ai","9":"tag-artificial-intelligence","10":"tag-artificialintelligence","11":"tag-technology","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom","14":"tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
