A reminder that no cross-border or <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ScotRail?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@ScotRail<\/a> trains will run to or from Glasgow Central today, the station remains closed following Sunday\u2019s fire on Union St.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re still working with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fire_scot?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@fire_scot<\/a> at the scene, and will share a further update as soon as we can.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Network Rail Scotland (@NetworkRailSCOT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NetworkRailSCOT\/status\/2031261158552838624?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March 10, 2026<\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>Four fire engines and two high-reach appliances remained at the scene at 6.30am on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Firefighters continued to pour water onto the shell of the building, from which occasional billows of smoke still rose.<\/p>\n<p>Streets in the area remain cordoned off as emergency services continue to deal with the incident.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/47264248a418fc6dd11af145574fad42-1773057927.jpg\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\"   alt=\"\"\/>STV News<\/p>\n<p>Network Rail has confirmed the station will remain closed on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The fire started at around 3.46pm on Sunday and quickly spread to a 19th-century commercial building at the corner of Gordon Street and Union Street, causing \u201cenormous damage\u201d and the loss of the building\u2019s dome.<\/p>\n<p>More than 200 firefighters were involved in the incident, with 18 fire engines and a specialist resource deployed to the scene at the height of the blaze.<\/p>\n<p>Network Rail said Glasgow Central will remain closed until further notice as structural engineers assess the stability of the remaining building.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4b540a86aa5c1702c9436fa20851bb71-1773135138.jpg\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1440\"   alt=\"Only the facade of the building has been left standing on Gordon Street.\"\/>Network Rail ScotlandOnly the facade of the building has been left standing on Gordon Street. Network Rail Scotland<\/p>\n<p>They confirmed they are working with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Four fire engines and two high-reach appliances remained at the scene at 6.30am on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>ScotRail said disruption is expected to last for \u201cseveral days\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>No trains will run to or from the high-level platforms at Scotland\u2019s busiest station, while trains that run through the low-level platforms will not call at Glasgow Central.<\/p>\n<p>Glasgow\u2019s Subway Network will be accepting ScotRail tickets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An SPT spokesman said: \u201cTicket acceptance with @ScotRail\u00a0is now in place on Subway services as city-wide travel disruption continues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Passengers will be able to board and depart at Anderston and Argyle Street stations.<\/p>\n<p>A multi-agency investigation is set to be undertaken to establish the cause of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Road closures<\/p>\n<p>The public has been urged to King George V bridge and turn left onto Broomielaw<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Clyde Street westbound, turn right onto Glasgow Bridge and then back over King George V bridge<\/p>\n<p> <a size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/> <\/a>\u2018Enormous damage and disruption\u2019<\/p>\n<p>First Minister John Swinney, who visited the scene of the fire on Monday morning, said the blaze had caused enormous damage and would lead to significant disruption.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThere is a significant incident that has been dealt with here in the city of Glasgow and I\u2019m relieved in all the efforts of our emergency services that there have been no injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s obviously a huge amount of disruption for members of the public in the west of Scotland as a consequence of the closure of Central Station and the closure of a number of roads, so there\u2019s a very focused recovery operation under way just now involving all partners.<\/p>\n<p> the busiest in Scotland \u2013 a huge number of passengers go in and out of the station every day \u2013 and the adjoining roads that are closed will also add to congestion in and around the height=\"150\" alt=\"Play icon\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government recognises that this is an unexpected and extraordinary incident to affect the city of Glasgow, so there will be numerous businesses affected and we will work with Glasgow City Council to support the council and businesses as part of the recovery operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government will be active supporters of that process, we\u2019ll be financial contributors to that process to make sure we can get the city centre of Glasgow up and running as quickly as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said the incident could have been \u201cso much worse\u201d without the actions of fire crews.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is another reminder of just how important Glasgow city centre is to Scotland\u2019s national life\u201d, she said. \u201cIt has no equivalent in terms of economic and cultural impact.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Thankful there are no casualties but very upsetting to see the damage the major fire has caused to the heart of Glasgow city centre. The priorities of all those working at and behind the scene are keeping everyone safe and supporting those immediately affected<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Susan Aitken (@SusaninLangside) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SusaninLangside\/status\/2030940450186461541?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March 9, 2026<\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnsuring a swift recovery and longer-term restoration must be a priority for all levels of government in the weeks ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue said on Monday afternoon: \u201cWe were alerted at 3.46pm on Sunday, March 8, to reports of a fire affecting the ground floor of a four-storey commercial building on Union Street, Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 250 firefighters have been involved in the effort in total to make the area safe since the alarm was raised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of this morning [Monday], nine fire appliances and three high-reach vehicles remain at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the height of the incident, 18 fire appliances and specialist resources \u2013 including a high volume pump drawing water from the River Clyde \u2013 were deployed to the scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no reported casualties, but the fire has caused extensive damage to the building, including the loss of its iconic dome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Follow alternative travel arrangements\u2019<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Network Rail said: \u201cGlasgow Central Station remains closed following the fire in a building on Union Street on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the fire is now under control, emergency services are still on site, and we continue to support their response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe station will remain closed today and likely tomorrow.
