West Ham have confirmed the nature of the injury sustained by Crysencio Summerville in the FA Cup amid fears it could be a recurrence of the blow which kept him out for eight months.<\/p>\n

Nuno Espirito Santo elected to rest key star Crysencio Summerville<\/a> when he made seven changes to the West Ham<\/a> team for the FA Cup fifth round victory over Brentford on Monday night.<\/p>\n

The Hammers drew 2-2 with two goals from Jarrod Bowen, before winning on penalties after putting away five perfect spot kicks.<\/p>\n

Despite scoring seven goals in his last 11 games, it was notable Summerville did not take one of the penalties having gone down injured after appearing as a second half substitute.<\/p>\n

West Ham confirm nature of Summerville injury<\/p>\n

Now West Ham have confirmed the nature of the \u2018concerning\u2019 Summerville injury amid fears it could be a recurrence of the one which saw him sidelined between January and September last year.<\/p>\n

Ironically that injury, which Summerville initially refused an operation on before admitting defeat in his attempts to heal naturally, was also sustained in the FA Cup.<\/p>\n

Summerville has been the beating heart of West Ham\u2019s resurgence and will be key to any hope the Hammers have of securing Premier League<\/a> survival.<\/p>\n

So seeing the Dutchman lying stricken on the turf with his hands and shirt pulled over his face is deeply worrying for everyone connected with the club.<\/p>\n

After the game Nuno admitted the injury to Summerville was a real worry but there was no clarity on what the issue was.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s assess him. He felt a knock. I don\u2019t know exactly what he has. It is concerning,\u201d Nuno said.<\/p>\n

Now a senior West Ham spokesman has exclusively told Hammers News the nature of the injury as the club awaits the results of a scan.<\/p>\n

Firstly it is good news for those worried it could be a recurrence of the hamstring injury which ultimately required an operation.<\/p>\n

Because West Ham have confirmed the Summerville injury is not to his hamstring.<\/p>\n

Summerville has not suffered recurrence of hamstring injury as star has scan on calf<\/p>\n

Instead it is a new injury to his calf.<\/p>\n

While that in itself is clearly a worry \u2013 especially as the player looked visibly upset by the knock \u2013 it will give hope of a quicker comeback time.<\/p>\n

And it may be reasonable to assume the severity of the injury is on the lower end of the scale given Summerville came back on and played out the rest of the game, albeit running gingerly.<\/p>\n

\u201cScans today,\u201d a senior West Ham spokesman told Hammers News on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a different injury. Last time it was his hamstring. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis time he has felt something in his calf somewhere, but it is NOT his hamstring.\u201d<\/p>\n

West Ham face a daunting clash with Man City in the Premier League on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Summerville will be absolutely vital to West Ham for the last nine games so the prospect of him being out for any period of time is concerning.<\/p>\n

From Nuno\u2019s point of view one positive is that the March international break will give Summerville time to recover without missing more matches should he be sidelined by the calf injury.<\/p>\n

On a personal note, though, that would be sad for the in-form winger\u2019s international ambitions.<\/p>\n

Because Ronald Koeman revealed this week that Summerville is in line for his first call-up to the Holland senior side as the 24-year-old aims for a place in the World Cup squad this summer.<\/p>\n
