{"id":470538,"date":"2026-03-12T00:23:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T00:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/470538\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T00:23:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T00:23:09","slug":"rare-cotton-top-tamarins-born-at-banham-zoo-in-norfolk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/470538\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare cotton-top tamarins born at Banham Zoo in Norfolk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The critically endangered cotton-top tamarins arrived at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edp24.co.uk\/news\/25571864.banham-zoo-confirms-names-newborn-red-panda-cubs\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Banham Zoo<\/a> on February 21.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Their birth marks an important addition to the conservation efforts led by the Zoological Society of East Anglia.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>The monkeys have been born at Banham Zoo (Image: Rosie Hiskey\/ZSEA)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Deborah Harris, animal manager at Banham Zoo, said: &#8220;The two new arrivals are doing so well. It&#8217;s lovely to watch the family interact.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;This is especially important for last year&#8217;s offspring as watching their parents rear their young is how they themselves will learn how to care for their own offspring in years to come.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Cotton-top tamarins are native to the tropical forests of northern Colombia.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Fewer than 6,000 individuals are estimated to remain in the wild due to habitat loss from deforestation, agriculture and urban development.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The birth of the twins offers a rare opportunity to observe the distinctive social behaviour of the species.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Unlike other species of monkey, cotton-top tamarin fathers are primarily responsible for carrying their infants.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They only hand them to their mother for feeding.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The newborns are said to be &#8220;thriving&#8221; under the care of their family group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The critically endangered cotton-top tamarins arrived at Banham Zoo on February 21.
