They will be on display in the London museum\u2019s revamped Gilbert Galleries, due to open on Saturday (14 March).<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The snuffboxes, part of the prestigious Rosalinde &amp; Arthur Gilbert Collection, were among seven taken in a daylight robbery from Luxe de poche: petits objets precieux au si\u00e8cle des lumi\u00e8res, held at the Mus\u00e9e Cognacq-Jay in Paris in November 2024. Two of the snuffboxes were on loan from the Louvre while two other snuffboxes came from the UK Royal Collection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\"><a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cy40nn3v9p9o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">According to<\/a> the BBC, the robbery resulted in an insurance payment of over \u00a33m to the Royal Collection Trust early last year. The recovery of five of the objects was announced by Paris Mus\u00e9es and the City of Paris on 14 October 2025 (the Snuffbox Fabrique Royale, made around 1740, belonging to the Royal Collection was not recovered however).<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cThanks to an extensive police investigation led by the Paris Criminal Investigation Department, five of the seven objects were recovered, including two Berlin-made snuffboxes dating from the 1760s that are particular stars of the Gilbert Collection, on long-term loan to the V&amp;A,\u201d says a project statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The first snuffbox, made of chrysoprase, gold and diamond, was commissioned by Frederick \u2018The Great\u2019 II of Prussia.\u00a0The second snuffbox, made of gold and diamonds in Berlin or St Petersburg around 1760, was presented by Catherine II of Russia (1729\u20131796) to the physician Thomas Dimsdale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In a V&amp;A <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/blog\/museum-life\/robbery-recovery-and-restoration-two-gold-boxes-from-the-rosalinde-and-arthur-gilbert-collection-return-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">blog-post<\/a>, Alice Minter, a curator of the Rosalinde &amp; Arthur Gilbert Collection,\u00a0describes how the boxes were repaired after being damaged in the robbery: \u201cA Parisian goldsmith\u2019s studio was appointed\u2026 the restoration of the\u00a0chrysoprase snuffbox was relatively straightforward. A general cleaning was completed first to remove dirt, glue residue and dust,&#8221; she said, before the boxes could be restored to their original state. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The restoration of the Dimsdale box was more challenging, Morris says. \u201cPart of the thumbspiece had been pushed in and some of the settings badly torn and squashed\u2026 it was agreed that elements should be straightened and diamonds refitted wherever possible, restoring the box to as much of its original state as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2025\/10\/06\/victoria-albert-museum-will-expand-gilbert-galleries-to-explore-looting-and-provenance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new Gilbert\u00a0Galleries<\/a> at the V&amp;A have been designed by the London-based Citizens Design Bureau practice. The number of galleries has increased from four to seven and occupy adjacent former offices overlooking both the John Madejski Garden and Exhibition Road, as part of the V&amp;A\u2019s Future Plan development programme. Project funders include the Gilbert\u00a0Trust for the Arts and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Arthur Gilbert\u00a0(1913\u20132001) and Rosalinde (1913\u201395) began their careers as fashion entrepreneurs in wartime London before moving to Los Angeles in 1949, where Arthur Gilbert became a successful property developer. Their collection was amassed from the 1960s onwards while they were living in Beverly Hills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">It was donated to the British nation in 1996 and initially shown in Somerset House and then, from 2008, at the V&amp;A.
