{"id":471382,"date":"2026-03-12T11:43:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T11:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/471382\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T11:43:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T11:43:07","slug":"welsh-water-to-pay-44-7m-after-sewage-failures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/471382\/","title":{"rendered":"Welsh Water to pay \u00a344.7m after sewage failures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The case is the seventh in a series of Ofwat investigations into all water and wastewater companies in England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Thames Water was fined nearly \u00a3123m following two investigations into the company, while other water firms will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofwat.gov.uk\/investigation-into-sewage-treatment-works-and-networks\/\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pay enforcement packages, external<\/a> of between \u00a311m and nearly \u00a363m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Our investigation has found serious and unacceptable breaches in how Dwr Cymru Welsh Water has operated and maintained its sewage works and networks, which has resulted in excessive spills from storm overflows to the environment,&#8221; said Lynn Parker from Ofwat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We now expect them to focus on putting things right so that customers can regain trust in their water company and the critical service they provide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The enforcement package will also tackle groundwater entering the sewer network &#8211; a major cause of frequent spills &#8211; and the money towards improving river quality will be spent in &#8220;extremely sensitive catchments&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ofwat said the improvements would need to be delivered by 2030 and added that the costs would be absorbed by the company, and not through higher customer bills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A Welsh Water spokesperson said: &#8220;We accept the findings of Ofwat&#8217;s investigation and apologise for where we have fallen short of the standards that our customers and regulators rightly expect from us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We have started a major transformation programme across the company, including within our wastewater services, focused on improving performance, strengthening operational oversight and accelerating investment to deliver better outcomes for rivers and coastal waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The investigation has considered both historic and more recent compliance, and we accept that improvements are needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A consultation on the package is now open to the public and key stakeholders until 2 April to offer any comments and responses before Ofwat announces its final decision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The case is the seventh in a series of Ofwat investigations into all water and wastewater companies in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":471383,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[1397,90,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-471382","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-science","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/471382","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=471382"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/471382\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/471383"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=471382"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=471382"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=471382"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
