{"id":472004,"date":"2026-03-12T19:13:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T19:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/472004\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T19:13:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T19:13:13","slug":"a-mass-migration-of-stars-from-the-milky-ways-center-could-explain-why-theres-life-in-our-solar-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/472004\/","title":{"rendered":"A &#8216;mass migration&#8217; of stars from the Milky Way&#8217;s center could explain why there&#8217;s life in our solar system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"43f1b989-cb37-4c96-a7b9-fc24ec4cef1d\">Thousands of sun &#8220;twins&#8221; spotted by a space telescope could shed new light on how our star came to host at least one life-friendly world \u2014 and a big stellar migration was involved.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers used data from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/gaia-telescope-retires-scientists-bid-farewell-to-the-discovery-machine-of-the-decade-that-mapped-2-billion-milky-way-stars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/gaia-telescope-retires-scientists-bid-farewell-to-the-discovery-machine-of-the-decade-that-mapped-2-billion-milky-way-stars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/gaia-telescope-retires-scientists-bid-farewell-to-the-discovery-machine-of-the-decade-that-mapped-2-billion-milky-way-stars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now-retired Gaia space telescope<\/a>, a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a> observatory that charted the movements of millions of stars in high definition from 2014 to 2025. The telescope yielded 6,594 stellar &#8220;twins&#8221; \u2014 stars with similar ages, temperatures, compositions and surface gravities as the sun \u2014 about 30 times more than previous surveys had found.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"43f1b989-cb37-4c96-a7b9-fc24ec4cef1d-2\">Moreover, most of these sibling stars were spotted in our sun\u2019s nearby neighborhood. Collectively, the samples tell of a mass movement of stars out of the galaxy&#8217;s crowded center over billions of years.<\/p>\n<p>Article continues below <\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"a40b0574-b6f4-471c-b5f3-7490cedc91f8\">&#8220;By studying a large population of these solar twins, we found evidence suggesting that many solar twins of the same age migrated through the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/milky-way\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/milky-way\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/milky-way\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a> around the same time as the sun, giving us new clues about when and how the sun moved from its birthplace to its current location,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/d-taniguchi-astro.github.io\/homepage\/index_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/d-taniguchi-astro.github.io\/homepage\/index_en.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daisuke Taniguchi<\/a>, an assistant professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University who co-led the team with Takuji Tsujimoto from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, told Live Science in an email.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-59675430-88d4-4605-b516-d2450b292a16\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Migration of the stars<\/p>\n<p id=\"105687c5-ba54-4e28-8d8d-e51b5a5d59b8\">Taniguchi led <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1051\/0004-6361\/202658913\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1051\/0004-6361\/202658913\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">one of the studies<\/a> published Thursday (March 12) in the journal Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1051\/0004-6361\/202658914\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1051\/0004-6361\/202658914\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">co-authored the other<\/a>. Together, the studies propose that when the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/1442-milky-ways-central-structure-fresh-clarity.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/1442-milky-ways-central-structure-fresh-clarity.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">central &#8220;bar&#8221; of stars<\/a> and gas in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/milky-way\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/milky-way\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/milky-way\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a> formed, this process both enhanced star formation and sent a number of stars into other regions of the galaxy. (Image credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech)<\/p>\n<p id=\"d21c46bf-3bef-46d4-ae18-1528c9e7d46e\">\u201cWe propose that the formation of the Milky Way&#8217;s central bar enhanced star formation and also triggered large-scale migration, leading to the formation and outward migration of the sun\u2014and many solar twins,\u201d Taniguchi said.<\/p>\n<p>Previous studies had noted that, based on its composition, the sun must have moved by at least a few thousand light-years out of the galaxy&#8217;s center. But the issue is that the bar in the Milky Way serves as a &#8220;barrier&#8221; to stars moving so far away, some models show. The solution to this issue is to propose that the barrier formed only after all of the stars left the region, the scientists suggested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9d6c6869-7be6-406b-b258-2dca69875c62\">&#8220;This scenario, if correct, could also provide new constraints on the epoch of the galactic bar formation,&#8221; Taniguchi said. The researchers suggested that our galaxy&#8217;s central bar took shape about 4 billion to 6 billion years ago. (The sun itself is roughly 4.5 billion years old, which puts it squarely within that time frame.)<\/p>\n<p>Taniguchi pointed out that in the center of the Milky Way, supernovas and other kinds of &#8220;energetic events&#8221; tend to occur more frequently than in other regions \u2014 in part due to the extreme population density of stars there. This would make the inner parts of the galaxy potentially hostile to life.
