{"id":473325,"date":"2026-03-13T11:39:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T11:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/473325\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T11:39:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T11:39:12","slug":"bdp-blames-tougher-trading-conditions-for-60-profits-slump-and-turnover-drop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/473325\/","title":{"rendered":"BDP blames \u2018tougher trading conditions\u2019 for 60% profits slump and turnover drop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BDP\u2019s group accounts for the year ending 30 June 2025 show the global giant\u2019s profits before taxation tumbled from \u00a310.2 million in 2024 to just under \u00a34.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>Documents just published at <a href=\"https:\/\/find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk\/company\/04045864\/filing-history\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Companies House<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk\/company\/04045864\/filing-history\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BDP Holdings<\/a> also reveal that its turnover dropped by nearly 13 per cent from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/bdp-posts-highest-ever-turnover-as-staff-numbers-hit-record-levels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record high<\/a> of \u00a3148.6 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/bdp-posts-highest-ever-turnover-as-staff-numbers-hit-record-levels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2024<\/a> to \u00a3129.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s headcount shrank too. The size of its workforce peaked in 2024 at 1,350 employees, but in the subsequent 12 months, the average number of directors, staff and contractors fell to 1,247, while the total number of architects and \u2018related professions\u2019 dropped from 892 to 814.<\/p>\n<p>During the period covered by the accounts, the multidisciplinary\u00a0company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/bdp-confirms-job-losses\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">laid off around 30 staff<\/a> from its London office. The UK\u2019s then second-largest practice \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/aj100-data-and-profiles\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now the third biggest<\/a> \u2013 confirmed it had carried out a round of redundancies in summer 2024, blaming \u2018turbulent market conditions\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Those tough trading conditions in London and the rest of the country are reflected in BDP\u2019s latest financial statement. The figures reveal a drop in UK fee income from \u00a3101.2 million to \u00a386.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Turnover from jobs in the \u2018rest of the world\u2019 dropped by \u00a34 million. However, the 63-year-old practice\u2019s European workload edged up slightly to \u00a311.9 million from \u00a311.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive Nick Fairham\u2019s review accompanying the 2025 accounts acknowledged that the financial results reflected \u2018tougher trading conditions, especially in the UK and China\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>But he said BDP had \u2018leaned into the resilience of our diversified model\u2019, adding that \u2018sector-led teams had unlocked new opportunities in Canada, Malaysia, Japan and India, alongside strong momentum in Dublin, Abu Dhabi and Toronto\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released to the AJ, Fairham added: \u20182025 has been a year of purposeful renewal.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As our international workload grows, we are enhancing our federated network of studios, building a more globally connected design practice that can share expertise across regions and deliver greater value for clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our focus remains on steady, sustainable progress and reinforcing the foundations of our socially progressive practice, supporting our clients\u2019 most important projects, and delivering positive outcomes for the communities we serve.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Last month, a design consortium comprising BDP, Cox Architecture and Collage Design unveiled designs for 141ha masterplan for the new Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave at the heart of Amdavad in India.<\/p>\n<p>Closer to home, in November, the practice BDP revealed its proposals for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/bdp-reveals-plans-for-latest-plymouth-civic-centre-redevelopment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Plymouth\u2019s Grade II-listed Civic Centre<\/a>, converting the landmark into housing and a skills hub for Plymouth Council, which retook control of the building from Urban Splash.<\/p>\n<p>Early last year, the practice joined the Tokio Marine group after the multinational insurance company bought Integrated Design &amp; Engineering Holdings (ID&amp;E Holdings) \u2013 the parent company of Nippon Koei, which itself owns BDP.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-819627\" class=\"size-full wp-image-819627\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/00-Aerial-Day.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1772\" height=\"914\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-819627\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BDP, Cox Architecture and Collage Design\u2019s for a new sports complex in Amdavad, India<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"BDP\u2019s group accounts for the year ending 30 June 2025 show the global giant\u2019s profits before taxation tumbled&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":473326,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[31],"tags":[168938,6225,6485,6486,149740,168939,1120,96,56,54,55],"class_list":["post-473325","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arts-and-design","tag-aj100","tag-arts","tag-arts-and-design","tag-artsanddesign","tag-bdp","tag-company-results","tag-design","tag-entertainment","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/473325","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=473325"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/473325\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/473326"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=473325"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=473325"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=473325"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
