The first was NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> helicopter <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ingenuity-mars-helicopter-perseverance-rover\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ingenuity-mars-helicopter-perseverance-rover\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ingenuity-mars-helicopter-perseverance-rover\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ingenuity<\/a>, whose fuselage was only the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/press_kits\/ingenuity\/landing\/mission\/spacecraft\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/press_kits\/ingenuity\/landing\/mission\/spacecraft\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">size of a tissue box<\/a>. The solar-powered Ingenuity was designed for just a handful of hops but survived an ambitious flight campaign that lasted nearly three years, from April 2021 to January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Building on what NASA learned, Dragonfly will be bigger \u2014 and powered by nuclear energy, not the sun. The Titan drone is also a full mission, costing about $3.35 billion; Ingenuity was a technology demonstrator with a price tag of just $85 million.<\/p>\n<p>Dragonfly is expected to launch in 2028 toward Titan, the largest moon of Saturn and second-largest satellite in the solar system, behind Jupiter&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16440-ganymede-facts-about-jupiters-largest-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16440-ganymede-facts-about-jupiters-largest-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16440-ganymede-facts-about-jupiters-largest-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ganymede<\/a>. Titan is thought to be <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/search-for-life\/the-precursors-of-life-could-form-in-the-lakes-of-saturns-moon-titan\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/search-for-life\/the-precursors-of-life-could-form-in-the-lakes-of-saturns-moon-titan\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/search-for-life\/the-precursors-of-life-could-form-in-the-lakes-of-saturns-moon-titan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rich in the precursor molecules<\/a> of life as we know it, which makes it an exciting target for scientists, but it has been studied up close just once \u2014 by the European <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17754-cassini-huygens.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17754-cassini-huygens.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17754-cassini-huygens.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Huygens<\/a> lander, which survived for a few hours in Titan&#8217;s skies and on its surface on Jan. 14, 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>After touching down on Titan, Dragonfly aims to &#8220;explore a range of diverse sites to study the chemistry, geology and atmosphere of the terrestrial moon and ultimately advance our understanding of life&#8217;s chemical origins,&#8221; NASA officials stated. But first, the mission needs to be readied for space.<\/p>\n<p>At APL, the first weeks of testing will focus on the spacecraft&#8217;s integrated electronics module \u2014 a sort of &#8220;brain&#8221; for the mission that focuses on items like guidance, navigation and data handling \u2014 and power-switching units.<\/p>\n<p>Testing and integration is expected to continue into early 2027. The spacecraft will next be shipped to Lockheed Martin Space in Littleton, Colorado for systems testing, before a brief return to APL to assess how Dragonfly will do in the space environment. APL will send Dragonfly to NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kennedy Space Center<\/a> no earlier than spring 2028, to launch aboard a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> Falcon Heavy rocket.<\/p>\n<p id=\"287714d9-4061-4ed0-aa06-fd79e26ef2cd\">Dragonfly&#8217;s protective shell for flying through space is also being tested: the shell finished aerodynamic assessments in wind tunnels at NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38326-langley-research-center.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38326-langley-research-center.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38326-langley-research-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Langley Research Center<\/a> in Virginia and is now in the integration and testing stage at Lockheed Martin. APL is also assessing insulating foam intended to keep Dragonfly from freezing in Titan&#8217;s frigid atmosphere, and other items like the science payload and flight radio are also coming together.<\/p>\n<p>While several years lie between now and launch, entering the build-and-test phase is a big milestone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve spent years designing and refining this amazing rotorcraft on computer screens and in laboratories, and now we get to bring all those elements together and transform Dragonfly into an actual flight system,&#8221; Annette Dolbow, the Dragonfly integration and test lead at APL, said in the same statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"NASA is one step closer to sending a drone mission to another world.
