I very rarely agree with a Labour MP. But when it emerged last month that Labour\u2019s Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, had privately admitted the Government \u201chad no growth strategy\u201d, I couldn\u2019t help but agree.<\/p>\n
The economy is in a mess right now. Unemployment is up. The price of household items keeps rising and rising. Electricity and fuel bills are extortionate. It\u2019s little wonder living standards are forecast to fall. Out in the real world, away from the Chancellor\u2019s grand offices, people are really struggling to get by. Families are cutting back on holidays and meals out. Pensioners are worried about putting the heating on, and in many cases are forced to go without. I even heard the harrowing story of a cancer patient who fears she won\u2019t be able to make her chemotherapy appointment because the cost of fuel is so high.<\/p>\n
Nigel Farage<\/a> and I know how tough things are and we are determined to give Daily Express readers relief. That\u2019s why this week we announced that we will reverse Rachel Reeves<\/a>\u2019 disastrous increase in fuel duty by 5p a litre. We won\u2019t just oppose it, as the Tories<\/a> have said they will do. We would reverse it in our first budget.<\/p>\n As a signal of our intent, we even took over a petrol station in Derbyshire this week and gave people reduced fuel prices. Unlike the old parties, when we say something we mean it!<\/p>\n And we will pay for that tax cut by cutting Ed Miliband\u2019s crazy net zero waste. Why is he using taxpayers\u2019 money to subsidise foreign electric cars and spend billions on hand outs for expensive and clunky heat pumps? It just doesn\u2019t make sense. We will end the expensive net zero madness that has been inflicted on the country and use that money to cut people\u2019s bills.<\/p>\n And we will unapologetically drill in the North Sea for oil and gas, bringing back good jobs to the UK. It is economic lunacy to ignore our rich energy reserves.<\/p>\n At times like this when bills keep rising with no end in sight, it\u2019s easy to lose hope. Britain is broken, but it can be fixed.
