\n\tA GULF OF SOFT POWER.\u00a0Politico<\/a>\u00a0reports that\u00a0Qatar\u00a0has \u201ccemented its soft power\u201d in the art world, with the country launching an edition of\u00a0Art Basel<\/a>\u00a0in Doha next February. The move,\u00a0Politico\u2019sCarlo Martuscelli\u00a0writes, \u201creflects the growing influence of the Gulf region in the high-end art world, long dominated by Euro-American hubs,\u201d as evinced by its lavish spending \u201creportedly over $1 billion annually\u2014on iconic artworks, including C\u00e9zanne\u2019s\u00a0The Card Players and\u00a0Gauguin\u2019s\u00a0Nafea Faa Ipoipo.\u201d With the\u00a02022 FIFA World Cup\u00a0in\u00a0the rear view, the country is expanding its cultural endeavors through global partnerships. This ambition, though, has not come without criticism. Qatar has long faced ongoing scrutiny over labor rights, especially in light of World Cup infrastructure deaths,\u00a0 as well as a European Parliament corruption scandal that some have dubbed \u201cQatargate.\u201d\u00a0Critics like artist\u00a0Gregory Sholette\u00a0warn that art fairs risk becoming vehicles for political agendas, questioning how much the art world\u2019s elite is complicit in laundering reputations. The artwork, featuring 200 real eggplants mounted on a wall, is part of the gallery\u2019s revamped exhibition, \u201cSingapore Stories: Pathways And Detours In Art.\u201d While the vegetables are meant to decompose naturally and be replaced regularly, several have been stolen before they had a chance to go rotten.
