Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Saturday that the company\u2019s Terafab project to make artificial intelligence (AI) chips will launch in seven days.<\/p>\n
Musk had said last year that Tesla probably will have to build \u201ca gigantic chip fab\u201d to make AI chips.<\/p>\n
Tesla is designing its fifth-generation AI chip to power its autonomous ambitions, and Musk at the company\u2019s annual meeting last year laid out potential manufacturing plans.<\/p>\n
Musk had said at the time that the EV maker could work with Intel and said, \u201cYou know, maybe we\u2019ll, we\u2019ll do something with Intel.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe haven\u2019t signed any deal, but it\u2019s probably worth having discussions with Intel,\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n
Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request seeking more details about the project.<\/p>\n
Musk has teased the AI5 chip before and reiterated that Tesla was also partnering with Taiwan\u2019s TSMC and South Korea\u2019s Samsung.<\/p>\n
The AI chips power Tesla\u2019s autonomous driving systems, including the Full Self-Driving software.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven when we extrapolate the best-case scenario for chip production from our suppliers, it\u2019s still not enough,\u201d Musk said last year, at Tesla\u2019s AGM.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo I think we may have to do a Tesla terafab. It\u2019s like giga but way bigger. I can\u2019t see any other way to get to the volume of chips that we\u2019re looking for. So I think we\u2019re probably going to have to build a gigantic chip fab.
