{"id":477506,"date":"2026-03-15T20:53:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T20:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/477506\/"},"modified":"2026-03-15T20:53:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T20:53:09","slug":"misplumbed-flats-in-worthing-are-pumping-sewage-into-sea-water-firm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/477506\/","title":{"rendered":"Misplumbed flats in Worthing are pumping sewage into sea &#8211; water firm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Southern Water has been at the centre of a number of incidents, including in January when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5yd771dn7no\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">millions of plastic pellets were washed up on the Sussex and Kent coast<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In 2019, it was hit with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-48755329\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a3126m fine for wastewater spills<\/a>, and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/record-90m-fine-for-southern-water-following-ea-prosecution\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a390m in fines in 2021, external<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Last April, it pleaded guilty to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c3673n9ny65o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">13 sewage spills in Kent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Surfers against Sewage, however, was unimpressed with Southern Water&#8217;s work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Chloe Flood, from the campaign group, said: &#8220;This is pretty outrageous from Southern Water. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We see this time and time again. If it&#8217;s not the weather, it&#8217;s us that are the problem. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This is nothing more than a PR stunt to shift the focus away from the real problems with Southern Water themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A spokesperson for Southern Water said it &#8220;engages closely with members of Surfers Against Sewage&#8221;, adding: &#8220;The causes of poor water quality are complex and varied &#8211; road run off, animal life, human behaviour on beaches.
