This week though, I decided to load up 2011’s Modern Warfare 3 instead, and the shaky state of its online multiplayer made me discover a long-forgotten game mode: Survival.

Yep, you may have forgotten that Xbox 360’s final Modern Warfare game packed in a PvE Horde mode simply titled ‘Survival’. It’s tucked away within the Spec Ops section of the 2011 FPS – and with the game’s online multiplayer now either empty or filled with hackers, this is a very cool option to have here in 2026. I’d totally forgotten about it to be honest, and it’s allowing me to revisit all of those classic maps, weapons and killstreaks in a totally offline environment via backwards compatibility.

Indeed, MW3 Survival mode is completely playable offline, and you can even jump into two-player local co-op too. Think Call of Duty campaign combat mixed with multiplayer maps and a Gears Horde wave-based format and you’re about there with Survival mode. Sure, it lacks the depth of COD Zombies, but it’s still a very nice way to enjoy backwards compatible Modern Warfare all these years later, and I’m glad Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games packed the mode in all those years ago.

You want to know another fantastic wrinkle to all of this? An old MW3 DLC purchase I made all the way back in 2012 — and had also completely forgotten about — works in Survival too, adding even more replayability to the mode. The base game’s maps have to be unlocked in Survival as you progress through the ranks, but those four or five forgotten DLC maps I’d bought ages ago worked and were playable right away. It’s so nice to have your decade-plus Xbox purchases respected, right?

Image: Remember when games had split screen mode? / Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Anyway, I’m not going to pretend that this mode is the best thing to ever grace the Call of Duty series, but I’ve had a ton of fun revisiting MW3 Survival all these years later. Classic COD isn’t in the best state multiplayer-wise nowadays, so anything that can be played and enjoyed solo and/or offline is a nice win in my book. Xbox backwards compatibility, you’ve done it again!

Have you ever discovered anything like this when revisiting an old game?
