{"id":478201,"date":"2026-03-16T06:41:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T06:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/478201\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T06:41:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T06:41:09","slug":"our-sun-may-have-migrated-across-the-milky-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/478201\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Sun may have migrated across the Milky Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have identified evidence that the Sun migrated outward through the Milky Way as part of a large-scale movement of similar stars about 4 to 6 billion years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The finding recasts the Sun\u2019s current position as the outcome of a broader galactic migration rather than a solitary journey through space.<\/p>\n<p>A large migration of stars<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/earthsnap.onelink.me\/3u5Q\/ags2loc4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fit-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1767050408_484_earthsnap-banner-news.webp.webp\" alt=\"EarthSnap\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Across a vast population of Sun-like stars in our region of the Milky Way, astronomers detected an unusually strong concentration of ages that cluster around the Sun\u2019s own era of formation.<\/p>\n<p>Analyzing this population, Professor Daisuke Taniguchi at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmu.ac.jp\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tokyo Metropolitan University<\/a> documented thousands of close solar counterparts whose ages trace the same timeline.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these stars appear to have left the inner regions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/spiral-galaxy-j23453268-0449256-black-hole-fury-defies-current-knowledge-base\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">galaxy<\/a> during the same 4 to 6 billion-year interval when the Sun was born.<\/p>\n<p>If that shared timing reflects a single galactic event, then the Sun\u2019s current orbit likely emerged from a large migration whose broader history still requires explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists find solar twins<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSolar twins\u201d are stars that closely match the Sun in temperature, gravity, and overall chemistry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Gaia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Gaia<\/a>, Europe\u2019s star-mapping mission, made more than three trillion observations of two billion objects from 2014 to 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of focusing on a few famous look-alikes, the team built a population within roughly 1,000 light-years, large enough for statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Broad age patterns can remain hidden in small samples, but become clear once the dataset grows large enough.<\/p>\n<p>Estimating the ages of stars<\/p>\n<p>To estimate ages, the researchers matched each star\u2019s light and chemistry to computer models of how stars age.<\/p>\n<p>Because brighter, easier targets often dominate sky catalogs, the team corrected for selection bias, when the easiest objects end up overrepresented in the sample.<\/p>\n<p>By creating tens of thousands of artificial Sun-like stars, they worked out which ages were most likely to be overcounted.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy allowed the real signal to emerge instead of leaving the results skewed toward the stars Gaia detected most easily.<\/p>\n<p>Stars in the same age group<\/p>\n<p>Once the team stripped away those viewing biases, one feature refused to disappear: stars the Sun\u2019s age were unusually common nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Around the solar neighborhood, that group is hard to explain as chance because stars born at many times should mix more evenly.<\/p>\n<p>Even more striking, the bump sits right beside the Sun\u2019s own age, about 4.6 billion years.<\/p>\n<p>That alignment makes the Sun look less like an exception and more like one member of a much larger migration.<\/p>\n<p>Galactic bar blocks movement<\/p>\n<p>Closer to the Milky Way\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/largest-mosaic-ever-maps-milky-ways-turbulent-center\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">center<\/a>, a long bar of stars rotates through the galaxy and changes how stars move.<\/p>\n<p>Near that bar, a corotation barrier, a gravitational bottleneck that makes long outward moves unusually hard, can form.<\/p>\n<p>Before this work, that barrier left a major contradiction between the Sun\u2019s likely birthplace and its calmer current position. If many near-matches crossed it together, the barrier probably was not yet doing the job it does now.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than drifting outward one by one over eons, these stars may have moved during a shorter, shared upheaval.<\/p>\n<p>As the Milky Way\u2019s bar took shape, its gravity could have stirred star birth near the center and loosened old paths.<\/p>\n<p>Another age pileup around two billion years hints that the galaxy\u2019s history was not one smooth, quiet process.
