Few bands remain as truly undefinable as Sparks<\/a>. <\/p>\n

From reaching glam rock heights with their hit \u2018This Town Ain\u2019t Big Enough for the Both of Us\u2019, to subsequent disco, new wave and synth-pop anthems, Sparks \u2013 a duo comprised of brothers Ron and Russell Mael \u2013 have only grown in power since their formation in 1968 due to their unfaltering eccentricity.<\/p>\n

Their appeal<\/a> is rooted in a characteristic quirkiness in their lyricism and on-stage theatrics, with Russell\u2019s hyper energy appearing in stark contrast to Ron\u2019s stoicism over his keyboard. \u201dArt pop\u201d seems to be the only label anyone can attempt to cast on Sparks, though challenge them under any genre\u2019s umbrella, and they would deliver.<\/p>\n

Their 2003 album Lil\u2019 Beethoven earned Sparks a cultural renaissance. Self-described as their \u201cgenre-defining opus,\u201d the album is often lauded as one of the best returns to form of any long-standing group. One popular YouTube comment likens the album to Pink Floyd\u2019s The Dark Side of the Moon, Queen\u2019s Night At The Opera, The Beatles\u2019 Sgt Pepper, and Led Zeppelin IV, arguing that Lil\u2019 Beethoven not being held in the same regard is \u201ca total mystery\u201d.<\/p>\n

For The Guardian<\/a> in 2017, answering a fan\u2019s question of whether their 2003 single \u2018My Baby\u2019s Taking Me Home\u2019 has \u201cany hidden meaning\u201d within its contents, the Mael brothers expanded on the song\u2019s contexts \u2013 or lack thereof. \u201cThank you for thinking that it has some kind of subtext, but actually, that song is about my baby taking me home,\u201d keyboardist and songwriter Ron Mael answers simply. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd trying to construct a scenario with what sounds like a pretty banal phrase, can become something more through the repetition of it,\u201d he continues. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt can be taken at face value, but the musical context can raise it into something that\u2019s more affirming and uplifting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ron Mael<\/p>\n

Indeed, \u2018My Baby\u2019s Taking Me Home\u2019 is primarily driven by the repetition of its title, soundtracked by an upbeat piano melody, corresponding hums and a chorus of voices amplifying the central message \u2013 the song sounds fit for scoring a silent film, and the accompanying music video emphasises this liminal space the song rests within, fusing together the futuristic and the analogue. We see flying spaceships floating through a world suspended from time, travelling through prairies and cityscapes with a strange, surrealist feel to them.<\/p>\n

Ron notes that a large portion of their 2003 album Lil\u2019 Beethoven<\/a> utilised repetitive vocals that were inspired, in part, by rap music and the tradition of repeating a vocal sample. He names composers John Adams, Philip Glass and Steve Reich as other inspirations, heard in their use of strings and choirs across the album. \u201cWe were trying something along those lines, but the meaning really is: my baby is taking me home,\u201d he asserts. <\/p>\n

Sparks managed to channel an excitement into Lil\u2019 Beethoven, and \u2018My Baby\u2019s Taking Me Home\u2019, in particular, that is distinctly, in their words, \u201cgenre-defining\u201d in a world entirely of their own creation. Vocalist Russell Mael notes a favourite section of the song: \u201cThere\u2019s one section where it breaks, and my favourite line to recite in that spoken section is: \u2018a rainbow forms, but we\u2019re both colour blind.\u2019 And the song kicks in again with: My baby\u2019s taking me home.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the music video, letters appear in between the colours of said rainbow to read \u201ccolorblind,\u201d before they rearrange like Scrabble pieces to read the nonsensical \u201cno crib doll\u201d. \u201cBut we can hear what others can\u2019t hear,\u201d Russell wages. \u201cWe can hear the sound of a chorus singing,\u201d before travelling back into their world.<\/p>\n
