Jessie Buckley\u2019s Oscar win<\/a> has uncorked delight across Ireland<\/a> and prompted an early start to St Patrick\u2019s Day celebrations.<\/p>\n

Politicians, artists and commentators expressed joy and pride after waking up on Monday to images of the Kerry actor clutching the statuette for best actress in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cJessie Buckley\u2019s award is a historic moment,\u201d said the Irish president, Catherine Connolly. \u201cThis achievement is a thoroughly deserved testament not only to Jessie\u2019s outstanding performance in Hamnet<\/a>, but to her performances both in film and on stage across her career to date.\u201d<\/p>\n

As if that wasn\u2019t enough, there are reports of thousands of Jessie Buckley masks being printed for St Patrick\u2019s Day<\/a> parades on Tuesday, a public holiday.<\/p>\n

The taoiseach, Miche\u00e1l Martin, led government tributes to Buckley, 36, and Richard Baneham, a Dubliner who won his third visual effects Oscar for his work on Avatar: Fire and Ash<\/a>. \u201cA wonderful night for Irish film and the performing arts,\u201d he posted on X.<\/p>\n

Simon Harris, the t\u00e1naiste, or deputy prime minister, said it had been fantastic to see Buckley become the first Irish woman to win the best actress Oscar. \u201cWhat a moment. Comhghairdeas Jessie!\u201d he said, using the Irish word for congratulations.<\/p>\n

Brenda Fricker<\/a> won a best supporting actress Oscar in 1990 for My Left Foot.<\/p>\n

Bookies had made Buckley the runaway favourite at the 98th Academy Awards for her depiction of William Shakespeare\u2019s wife, Agnes Hathaway, in Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s film version of Maggie O\u2019Farrell\u2019s novel.<\/p>\n

Even so, friends, relatives and supporters in her home town of Killarney<\/a> who stayed up to follow the ceremony at the Dolby theatre in Hollywood were nervous \u2013 she faced competition from Emma Stone for Bugonia, Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue and Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As the announcement neared, tension had risen, said her uncle, Sean Buckley. \u201cThere\u2019s no weight with family. You love them so much always. But when there\u2019s so much external narrative, and people are talking about it, that\u2019s when you feel the hype building,\u201d he told broadcaster RT\u00c9.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever was in that envelope wasn\u2019t going to change our view of her, or her view of herself, or where she sits within our family. That was all going to be the same. But it\u2019s just the icing on the cake for her and for her family.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the stage, Buckley thanked her parents, who were in the audience. \u201cMum, Dad, thank you for teaching us to dream and to never be defined by expectation but to care from your own passion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Relatives said Buckley\u2019s success \u2013 she has swept every major award in the past year \u2013 would not weaken her connectedness to Ireland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She was \u201cmore likely to be in the garden covered in muck than walking down a high street\u201d, her brother, Killian Buckley, told RT\u00c9. \u201cAt her heart, she\u2019s incredibly, incredibly good at being herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

He described how he and his sister used to stage plays in the family\u2019s living room and charge their parents to view it. \u201cAt the time, it seemed like a high price for them to pay, but I think it was good now.\u201d<\/p>\n

A cousin, R\u00f3is\u00edn Buckley, said Jessie was the most open person. \u201cShe\u2019s interesting, she\u2019s articulate. You could talk to Jessie about anything and there would be no judgment. In Hamnet, it felt like she wasn\u2019t acting. It was like she was walking around the woods around Killarney, gathering bits and bobs to make her own potion. What you see is what you get.
