A new report by UK Music has put a figure on that for the UK in its \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukmusic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Black-Music-Means-Business.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Black Music Means Business<\/a>\u2018 report.<\/p>\n<p>The study estimates\u00a0that across the last 30 years, Black music\u00a0has contributed \u00a324.5bn out of a total \u00a330bn UK market \u2013 80% of the total.<\/p>\n<p>This is a serious piece of work, not least because it had to start by defining what Black Music is \u2013 \u201cMusic that has its roots and inspiration derived from the culture, beliefs, traditions and history of Black people and the African diaspora\u201d \u2013 and then how to map it across genres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack Music has shaped the sound and global success of British music for decades, yet its true commercial value has never been fully recognised,\u201d said Paulette Long OBE, vice chair of UK Music\u2019s diversity taskforce. \u201cThis report makes clear that its contribution is undeniable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Did you guess that there is a \u2018but\u2019 coming? There is. Despite the value quantified in the report, it also warns that there is an \u201copportunity gap\u201d in the industry, with equity and representation\u00a0still falling short.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the extraordinary success of Black Music in the UK, many Black Music professionals and creators face systemic financial inequalities, earning less than their non-Black counterparts and often requiring supplementary income to sustain their careers,\u201d as the report puts it. But it has\u00a0constructive ideas to change this situation too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe report shares recommended practical actions that are an opportunity to work collaboratively to help close inequities, unlock further growth and work to ensure the UK music industry is fair and reflective of the rich diversity of the talent that powers it,\u201d noted Eunice Obianagha, head of diversity at UK Music.<\/p>\n<p>Related Stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What\u2019s the value of Black Music to the wider music industry?
