The average retreat was more than 20 metres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe disintegration of the glacier tongue is also progressing at the Pasterze, Austria\u2019s largest glacier, making the consequences of climate change visible,\u201d the club says in the report, which covers 2024 and 2025. <\/p>\n<p>The report adds that the long-term trend shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2026\/02\/26\/could-glacier-melt-slow-climate-change-scientists-thought-so-until-now\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">glaciers<\/a> in Austria continue to &#8220;shrink significantly&#8221; in length, area and volume.<\/p>\n<p>The impact of Austria&#8217;s shrinking glaciers<\/p>\n<p>The retreat of glaciers in Europe has vast implications for drinking water, power generation, agriculture, infrastructure, recreational activities, the Alpine landscape and more.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbouring Switzerland, which is home to the most glaciers in Europe, has noted a similar retreat in its glaciers in recent years, a trend that has been reported around the world. <\/p>\n<p>Since 2015, glaciologists say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2025\/10\/02\/enormous-melting-sees-swiss-glaciers-shrink-by-3-this-year-the-fourth-biggest-retreat-on-r\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Switzerland&#8217;s glaciers<\/a> have shrunk by a quarter, with more than 1,000 small glaciers already vanishing.<\/p>\n<p>Poor weather conditions including low snowfall, warm temperatures including an exceptionally hot June last year, nearly 5\u00b0C above the average, have contributed to the retreat, the club says.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8216;wake-up call&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe glaciers are melting \u2013 and with every new report, the urgency grows,\u201d club vice president Nicole Slupetzky says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s no longer a question of whether we can still save the glaciers in their old form; it\u2019s about mitigating the consequences for ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such changes in the Alps should serve as a \u201cwake-up call\u201d for policymakers and the public in its behaviour, the club argues.<\/p>\n<p>It says the current figure was lower than during the previous two years, but still ranks as the eight-largest retreat in the 135 years of measurements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Published on 13\/03\/2026 &#8211; 16:25 GMT+1 All but two of Austria\u2019s 96 glaciers have retreated over the last&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":480394,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[3256,556,1397,5099,20103,8170,90,16369,56,54,55],"class_list":["post-480393","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-austria","tag-climate-change","tag-environment","tag-extreme-weather","tag-glaciers","tag-global-warming","tag-science","tag-sea-level-rise","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/480393","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=480393"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/480393\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/480394"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=480393"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=480393"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=480393"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
