{"id":482438,"date":"2026-03-18T16:09:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T16:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/482438\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T16:09:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T16:09:14","slug":"stefano-boeri-creates-travertine-piazza-alongside-colosseum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/482438\/","title":{"rendered":"Stefano Boeri creates travertine piazza alongside Colosseum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Italian studio Stefano Boeri Interiors has revamped a semi-circular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/plazas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">piazza<\/a> alongside the Colosseum amphitheatre in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/rome\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rome<\/a>, recreating\u00a0the bases of several of its original columns.<\/p>\n<p>Wrapped around the southern side of the Colosseum, the piazza occupies a site where the previous outer wall of the arena was located before it collapsed in a 14th-century earthquake.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2306784 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/colosseum-rome-stefano-boeri-interiors-southern-ambulatory-areas_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Travertine piazza alongside Colosseum\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Stefano Boeri Interiors has revamped the space to the south of the Colosseum<\/p>\n<p>Built in AD 80 as the largest amphitheatre in the ancient world, the arena was wrapped in two arched colonnades that supported the upper seating levels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stefanoboerinteriors.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stefano Boeri Interiors<\/a>, which is led by architects Stefano Boeri and Giorgio Don\u00e0, aimed to recall the original Roman structure through the redesign of the space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2306782 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/colosseum-rome-stefano-boeri-interiors-southern-ambulatory-areas_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to the Colosseum\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The studio created a travertine piazza with seats in the location of the original columns<\/p>\n<p>The studio returned the ground to its original level and replaced the cobbles with travertine slabs that cover the area, known as the crepidine, which was formerly within the building.<\/p>\n<p>Evenly placed throughout the curved piazza are 44 raised stone benches, each 40 centimetres high, which mark the footprints of the original columns.<\/p>\n<p>Roman numerals were embedded in the floor to mark the entry gate numbers that were originally engraved on the lost arches.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2021\/07\/30\/stefano-boeri-rome-domus-aurea-entrance-walkway\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/domus-aurea-entance-stefano-boeri-architetti-rome-italy-architecture_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"A walkway inside Domus Aurea\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Stefano Boeri completes new entrance and walkway at Rome&#8217;s Domus Aurea\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The archaeological excavation campaign allowed for a new reading of the Flavian Amphitheatre&#8217;s history,&#8221; said Don\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The crepidine and the repaving of the excavation area, together with portions left exposed, restore the Colosseum&#8217;s original levels and reconstruct its ancient base,&#8221; Don\u00e0 added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through the architectural abstraction of the missing ambulatory supporting pillars, the intervention evokes the system of former access routes to the monument&#8217;s interior.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2306787 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/colosseum-rome-stefano-boeri-interiors-southern-ambulatory-areas_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Roman numeral signage at Colosseum \" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Roman numerals were embedded in the paving<\/p>\n<p>At the western end of the piazza, the travertine pavement is broken by what the studio describes as &#8220;an archaeological window&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This lower space reveals the archaeological remains of what lies under the piazza.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2306790 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/colosseum-rome-stefano-boeri-interiors-southern-ambulatory-areas_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"An archaeological window in Rome\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>&#8220;An archaeological window&#8221; was left to allow visitors to view the remains<\/p>\n<p>According to the studio, the piazza was designed &#8220;according to principles of reversibility&#8221; and, overall, Boeri hopes that the revamp will help visitors better understand the scale of the building.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Designing the space in front of the Colosseum&#8217;s southern facade was an extraordinary experience, carried out in close collaboration with the management and technical staff of the Archaeological Park,&#8221;
