Rory McIlroy will serve starters made from the meat of the North American animal at Augusta National next month in tribute to his food of choice before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/dec\/25\/i-was-there-mcilroy-clinches-golf-grand-slam-with-long-coveted-masters-win\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">winning the Masters last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The wine McIlroy drank to toast victory, food that conjures \u00admemories of his childhood in Belfast and a dish made by his mother, Rosie, also \u00adfeature in the \u00adMasters \u00adchampion\u2019s dinner for 2026. In a nod to the venue\u2019s attention to detail, McIlroy revealed that chefs from Augusta made a special visit to a New York restaurant to replicate his favourite tuna recipe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">McIlroy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2026\/mar\/16\/rory-mcilroy-playing-schedule-back-injury-masters-golf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will begin his Masters defence<\/a> from 9 April. Two days \u00adearlier, he hosts fellow past \u00adwinners in the annual gathering in the Augusta clubhouse. The reigning champion picks the menu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When unveiling his choices on Wednesday, \u00adMcIlroy\u2019s grilled elk sliders \u2013 served with caramelised onion jam and roasted garlic aioli \u2013 turned heads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn the buildup to the \u00adMasters last\u00a0year, I was eating a lot of elk,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI got this big shipment of elk and I\u00a0was eating a lot of that. I\u00a0didn\u2019t want\u00a0elk to be the main course because I didn\u2019t know if \u00adeveryone would like that. So I incorporated that into the \u00adappetisers.\u201d In the same area of the menu are Rosie McIlroy\u2019s bacon-wrapped dates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wagyu filet mignon or seared salmon will follow yellowfin tuna carpaccio. \u201cOne of our favourite restaurants right now is in New\u00a0York, called Le Bernardin,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cEric Ripert is the chef there and this is a dish from that restaurant. It\u2019s a really simple dish, but every time we\u00a0go to, that\u2019s the one thing I have to have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSo that\u2019s a fun one the club worked with me on. They went up to\u00a0the restaurant and worked with the chefs, and made sure; they obviously wanted to get it right for the night, so that\u2019s really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Champ, a traditional Northern Irish side, is an accompaniment. \u201cWhen I was a kid I used to eat champ by the bowlful,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cSo \u00adtrying to tie in a little bit of my upbringing\u00a0there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">McIlroy has a love for wine and Augusta\u2019s famous stock. Four are on his menu, including Bordeaux from 1989 \u2013 the year of his birth \u2013 and 1990. \u201cThat is the wine I drank the night\u00a0I won the Masters, so brings back some great memories,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI wanted to be really intentional with the wines. It\u2019s something I\u2019m really into and passionate about and started to collect wine over the past\u00a0decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cTo work with the sommeliers at the club and be able to choose these wines was a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Elk as the key to Masters success: who had any i-deer?
