I was in my 40s at the time (now, I\u2019m 105). <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">As the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wyoming, I incidentally had the assignment of designing the university\u2019s new science center. It was a huge project and I was responsible for raising the funds for it, which felt nearly impossible and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a60025704\/stress-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a60025704\/stress-symptoms\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"stressful\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stressful<\/a> at the time.  To help deal with the stress, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a62953139\/how-to-start-running-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a62953139\/how-to-start-running-program\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"started running\" data-node-id=\"1.3\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">started running<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">The reason I choose running over any other sport is because it\u2019s beginner-friendly and doesn\u2019t require much equipment. When I started, all I had was a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/gear\/a19663621\/best-running-shoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/gear\/a19663621\/best-running-shoes\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"running shoes\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">running shoes<\/a> and exercise clothes. <br data-node-id=\"2.3\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I quickly discovered beginning my day with a run helped improve my concentration and focus. It was through running I realized that not everything was important enough to get done and some things I could save for the next day. Running also gave me the opportunity to focus on something other than work and it helped me relax, which is why I fell in love with it.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I enjoyed running by myself, but the closest I\u2019ve ever come to running with a buddy was when I had a furry friend named Rob. He was a German Shepherd who loved running, and whenever I had little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a65530391\/positivity-in-running-toadlyfe\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a65530391\/positivity-in-running-toadlyfe\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"motivation\" data-node-id=\"5.1\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">motivation<\/a>to get out of bed, he would come to my bedside, and stick his nose in my face. This was his way of telling me I had no other choice but to run, which made it easier to get out of bed on those days. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">My favorite place to run is the golf course near my house (when people aren\u2019t golfing\u2014of  course). When I first started, I ran based on time, and considered the amount of time I had before work:  On days when I had a busy schedule, I ran less. If I had more time on my hands, I would spend more time outdoors clocking miles. I just went with the flow, rather following a set route.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">The science center was completed in 1969 and I eventually retired from the university in 1990, but I kept running as a part of my regular routine and started racing. That\u2019s when I became more intentional about running farther. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I decided to compete at the <a href=\"https:\/\/nsga.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/nsga.com\/about\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"National Senior Games\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Senior Games<\/a> (NSG) in 1997 in Tucson, Arizona, when I was 78 years old. This biennial competition is hosted by the National Senior Games Association and it allows older athletes to compete in 25 different sports, including road races and track and field events.  To qualify, you must place top four in your age division on a state level the year before. I ran the 5K and 10K that year. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\"> In 2019, when I was 100, I set the record for the <a href=\"https:\/\/nsga.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TF-Track-Top-10-2023-100M.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/nsga.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TF-Track-Top-10-2023-100M.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"100 meter\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">100 meter<\/a> in my age division at the Games with a time of 36.93, more than five seconds faster than the previous record. I still hold the number-one spot in that event. I was confident in my ability to run and it felt great to cross the finish line. I also won the <a href=\"https:\/\/nsga.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TF-Track-Top-10-2023-400M.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/nsga.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TF-Track-Top-10-2023-400M.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"400 meter\" data-node-id=\"10.3\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">400 meter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nsga.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TF-Track-Top-10-2023-200M.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/nsga.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TF-Track-Top-10-2023-200M.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"200 meter\" data-node-id=\"10.5\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">200 meter<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/nsga.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TF-Track-Top-10-2023-50M.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/nsga.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TF-Track-Top-10-2023-50M.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"50 meter\" data-node-id=\"10.7\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">50 meter<\/a> that year, all of which still stand in the top three fastest times for those 100 and older.<br data-node-id=\"10.9\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"body-text css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Nowadays, I spend most of my time walking and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/g23341982\/best-bodyweight-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/g23341982\/best-bodyweight-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength training with bodyweight exercises\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength training with bodyweight exercises<\/a> to improve my balance. Gerald Meyer<\/p>\n<p>Pace Yourself<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I learned the trick to running longer distances is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/beginner\/a37809506\/running-pace-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/beginner\/a37809506\/running-pace-for-beginners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"pace yourself\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-b8iqzl emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pace yourself<\/a>, especially when you\u2019re competing. You\u2019ve got a long way to go, so it\u2019s better not to give it your all in the first 100 yards.
