{"id":485642,"date":"2026-03-20T10:19:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T10:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/485642\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T10:19:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T10:19:08","slug":"plans-to-turn-1930s-falmouth-house-into-huge-modern-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/485642\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans to turn 1930s Falmouth house into huge modern home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  At a meeting of Falmouth Town Council\u2019s planning committee on Monday, councillors considered an application to renovate and extend the house at 17 Gyllyngvase Terrace.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>What the house looks like now&#8230; (Image: Cornwall Council\/la)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They recommended refusal after residents raised concerns that the proposed rebuild would be out of keeping with the terrace and would harm neighbours\u2019 amenity.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Next-door neighbour Caitlyn Thomas told councillors that, if approved, \u201cany trace of the existing beautiful 1930s arts and crafts movement house will be gone\u201d, replaced by \u201ca huge very modern property totally out of keeping with every other house on the terrace in terms of size and scale and the materials used\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>&#8230;and what it would look like if permission was given (Image: Cornwall Council\/la)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Thomas said the scheme would bring a \u201chuge high wall\u201d on the boundary about two metres from her sitting room and bedroom windows, harming the outlook and reducing natural light.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She said the extension would be \u201coverbearing and utterly dominating\u201d, creating overshadowing and a \u201cnarrow wind tunnel effect\u201d that would affect enjoyment of her home.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Cllr Samuel Carmichael said the proposals would take \u201ca beautiful 1930s house\u201d and turn it into something \u201ccompletely out of character\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He proposed the application be recommended for refusal, and the committee supported that recommendation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>What the house looks like now&#8230; (Image: Cornwall Council\/la)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In nine written objections on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.falmouthpacket.co.uk\/search\/?search=cornwall&amp;ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cornwall<\/a> Council\u2019s planning portal, residents argue the increased height and bulk would reduce daylight and winter sunlight, create overshadowing and an overbearing outlook, and in some cases diminish sea and sky views.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Others raise concerns about overlooking from new windows or terrace areas and the loss of privacy for neighbouring rooms and gardens.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>&#8230;and what it would look like if permission was given (Image: Cornwall Council\/la)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Objectors also say the development would amount to overdevelopment of the plot, narrowing gaps between buildings and breaking the established roofline and rhythm of the terrace within the Conservation Area.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Some comments also refer to parking pressure in the area and claim changes to the access could remove an on-street space, while others are worried about noise, dust and construction traffic if the building is largely demolished and rebuilt.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The application reference is PA26\/01331.
