The comprehensive annual guide, which has been running for 14 years, features the best cities, towns and villages to live in across the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">After visiting each area, The Sunday Times&#8217; expert panel chooses the most desirable places to reside in each region. The affluent market town of <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/altrincham\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Altrincham<\/a> has topped the list of the best places to live in the north west of England, whilst <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/smug-south-manchester-suburb-named-33615245\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">&#8216;smug&#8217; south Manchester suburb<\/a>, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/didsbury\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Didsbury<\/a>,<a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/smug-south-manchester-suburb-named-33615245\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\"> <\/a>has also been recognised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Here&#8217;s what The Times judges had to say about Altrincham and Didsbury:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Altrincham Market, which includes six kitchens and two bars in its Market House, was also named in Harden\u2019s Best UK Restaurants 2025 guide\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2_161118altrincham2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Altrincham has been named as the north west's best place to live\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Altrincham has been named as the north west&#8217;s best place to live(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p>Altrincham<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Altrincham featured on The Times&#8217; list in 2018, when it was named the best place to live in the north west, and again in 2019 and 2020, when it won the grand title of the best Place to live in the UK. The market town was then named the regional winner for the north west again in 2021, and was also named alongside <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/prestwich\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Prestwich<\/a> in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Noted as &#8216;classy, cool and effortlessly comfortable&#8217;, The Times judges said: &#8220;Altrincham is &#8220;a top-notch town brimming with independent businesses and big brands. Now it\u2019s flying even higher. Co-working has arrived on the high street, with three floors of space at Foundation, in the old Rackhams department store.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;The leisure centre reopened in August 2025 after a \u00a320 million revamp, the market food hall draws diners from all over the region, and the schools are among the most successful in the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2_040326didsbury7.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Didsbury has been recognised in The Times guide\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Didsbury has been recognised in The Times guide(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p>Didsbury<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Didsbury was last recognised by The Times back in 2015, but has now made its way into the top six best places to live in the north west. Although branded &#8216;a little bit smug&#8217;, the judges recognised the leafy suburb&#8217;s charming <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/ https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/property\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">properties<\/a> and &#8216;real Manc heart and soul&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;<a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/didsbury\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Didsbury<\/a> is stylish, solid, safe and, yes, a little bit smug in parts &#8211; but that\u2019s OK,&#8221; said The Times panel. &#8220;The self-confidence that comes with an M20 address is what keeps the aspirational folk of Manchester queuing up to pay seven-figure sums for something redbrick, pretty and Victorian with a bay window and a driveway off a tree-lined street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;For all its aspirational reputation, there\u2019s real Manc heart and soul here: chummy neighbours, summer festivals and a legendary kids\u2019 football club, Fletcher Moss Rangers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Elsewhere in the north west, The Eden Valley in Cumbria, Lancaster in Lancashire, Aigburth in Liverpool and Macclesfield in Cheshire were also picked as the best areas in the region by the Sunday Times judges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Here&#8217;s what they had to say:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Eden Valley, Cumbria<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;The Eden Valley\u2019s undulating landscape soothes the soul. The hills and dales are dotted with busy little market towns and picturesque villages. There are shops, farmers\u2019 markets, friendly pubs and good schools,&#8221; notes The Times judges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;For all its peace and quiet, it\u2019s not in the middle of nowhere. The big attraction is a location that\u2019s perfect for a quick escape to England\u2019s greatest landscapes: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland,&#8221; says The Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;There\u2019s a lively coffee and cultural scene, too. The Gregson, a community and arts centre, is at the heart of much of the good stuff here. It\u2019s home to more than 70 groups, including the brilliantly named Breath of Fresh Air choir, for people with asthma and breathing conditions, and the LGBTQ+ arts collective Queer By Gum.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Liverpool: Aigburth<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Aigburth is lively Liverpool\u2019s most modern and rewarding suburb. Sefton Park is a great, green marvel, and the brightly coloured shops, caf\u00e9s and restaurants of Lark Lane a star attraction. The redbrick terraces are affordable family homes, there are easy connections to the city centre and a choice of good schools,&#8221; The Times says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Macclesfield, Cheshire<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;With one muddy boot in the Peak District and one designer loafer in Cheshire\u2019s golden triangle, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/macclesfield\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Macclesfield<\/a> is an unshowy place compared with neighbours such as <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/wilmslow\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Wilmslow<\/a> and Alderley Edge, but it has what it takes to keep everyone happy: schools, trains to Manchester and London, an attractive, improving and accessible town centre and life\u2019s big necessities &#8211; a hospital and supermarkets,&#8221; The Times says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Helen Davies, editorial projects director and Best Places to Live editor, says: \u201cThis guide is a great opportunity to highlight the best places in Britain.
