Starling<\/a>\u00a0has added an agentic artificial intelligence (AI) financial assistant to its banking app in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

The company began rolling out the new Starling Assistant to personal account customers on Friday (March 20) and plans to extend it to business and joint accounts soon, Starling said in a Friday\u00a0press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Starling Assistant responds to voice and natural language prompts and then carries out banking tasks on the customer\u2019s behalf, according to the release.<\/p>\n

It can help customers manage their day-to-day finances, gain personalized financial\u00a0insights\u00a0and get general banking guidance, the release said.<\/p>\n

For example, Starling Assistant can set up automatic transfers, generate a quiz to help users understand their spending patterns, and teach a user how to set up\u00a0Apple Pay<\/a>, per the release.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time to embrace a new era of banking, one\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0powered by agentic AI,\u201d\u00a0Harriet Rees<\/a>, group chief information officer at Starling, said in the release. \u201cAt Starling, we want to encourage our customers to trust that AI can help them with money management, and we\u2019re excited to be pioneering the use of this cutting-edge technology to help people be good with money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starling Assistant is built with Google\u00a0Gemini<\/a>\u00a0running on the\u00a0Google Cloud<\/a>\u00a0platform, according to the release.<\/p>\n

The AI assistant is available on an opt-in basis, all data is stored in Starling\u2019s Google Cloud environment and no data is used for training purposes, per the release.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI is fundamentally changing how people interact with their finances,\u201d\u00a0Graham Drury<\/a>, director, FSI, Google Cloud in the U.K. and Ireland, said in the release. \u201cWe are moving away from clicking through menus and navigating complex apps, toward simply having a conversation about your money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starling said in October that it added\u00a0an\u00a0AI-powered scam detection tool<\/a>\u00a0called Scam Intelligence to its app. Scam Intelligence is designed to warn customers against specific indicators of\u00a0scams\u00a0and inform them about what to look out for in future transactions.<\/p>\n

In June, the company added\u00a0an\u00a0AI banking tool<\/a>\u00a0called Spending Intelligence that helps customers understand their spending habits by answering questions such as, \u201cHow much did I spend on groceries last week?\u201d<\/p>\n
