{"id":487694,"date":"2026-03-21T13:35:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-21T13:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/487694\/"},"modified":"2026-03-21T13:35:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-21T13:35:08","slug":"ceredigion-villagers-plant-50000-trees-to-try-to-save-their-homes-from-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/487694\/","title":{"rendered":"Ceredigion villagers plant 50,000 trees to try to save their homes from flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In June 2012, a month&#8217;s worth of rain fell in just 24 hours over parts of mid Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The deluge turned roads into lakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In the small village of Tal-y-bont, Ceredigion, 27 homes were flooded as the rivers Leri and Ceulan burst their banks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">After that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-18378124\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">devastating day<\/a>, a group of villagers came together with an idea &#8211; they would plant trees, thousands of them, to try to reduce the risk of flooding in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Trees and woods play a &#8220;vital&#8221; role in reducing flooding by slowing down the flow of rainwater, absorbing rainwater and reducing erosion, according to the Woodland Trust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We started off with the aim to plant 2,000 trees in the first winter,&#8221; said Linda Denton, who coordinates the group of volunteers who call themselves the Tal-y-bont Treeplanters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;And we actually managed about eight [thousand]. We&#8217;ve gradually increased it from there.
