{"id":487923,"date":"2026-03-21T16:46:20","date_gmt":"2026-03-21T16:46:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/487923\/"},"modified":"2026-03-21T16:46:20","modified_gmt":"2026-03-21T16:46:20","slug":"cut-to-fuels-excise-considered-as-ireland-faces-more-severe-effects-on-energy-prices-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/487923\/","title":{"rendered":"Cut to fuels excise considered as Ireland faces \u2018more severe\u2019 effects on energy prices \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland faces weeks more disruption to energy markets which at a minimum will be \u201cmore severe\u201d if the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\">war in the Gulf<\/a> persists, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-energy-agency\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-energy-agency\/\">International Energy Agency<\/a> (IEA) has told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\">Government<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A paper given by the IEA\u2019s top energy economist to the State\u2019s energy affordability taskforce on Thursday said huge volumes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oil\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oil\/\">oil<\/a> and gas will not be produced by Gulf countries this month even assuming flows gradually resume towards the end of March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">With storage filling in the Gulf and no capacity to ship oil out, or with facilities impacted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\">Iranian<\/a> attacks, it warned that \u201cif flows do not start to resume in late March, the impact will be more severe\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Even if the conflict allows shipments to resume, the IEA presentation \u2013 seen by The Irish Times \u2013 outlines that \u201csupply in April and beyond will take time to return to pre-crisis levels\u201d, with tankers stuck on either side of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/2026\/03\/20\/why-strait-of-hormuz-military-escort-plan-is-fraught-with-risk\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/2026\/03\/20\/why-strait-of-hormuz-military-escort-plan-is-fraught-with-risk\/\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, the shipping lane beside Iran, while closed oilfields will take time to come back online. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Amid growing concerns in Government about the sprawling impact of the conflict, the paper outlined that nearly six billion cubic metres of Middle East gas exports have already been lost, with more than 10 billion \u201ccertain to be disrupted even with a quick resolution to the conflict\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Government sources said there were no concerns about supply to Ireland, but the impact of shortages on market prices would hit energy consumers here. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">IEA executive director Fatih Birol, told the Financial Times on Friday the conflict was \u201cthe greatest global energy security threat in history\u201d, with politicians and markets underestimating its scale.
