Scots taxpayers<\/a> face a bill of over \u00a354million for \u201cfailing\u201d schemes for hydrogen-powered buses<\/a> and homes, experts have warned. It follows the collapse of a deal for hydrogen<\/a> buses in Aberdeen<\/a> last month, led by Tory donor Jo Bamford, son of JCB billionaire Lord Bamford.<\/p>\n The scheme<\/a> for 25 buses, which received multi-million pound investments from the UK and Scots governments, was ditched in favour of cheaper electric vehicles.<\/a> It follows a similar project in Dundee<\/a> being scrapped in 2022.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, a two-year trial for hydrogen boilers<\/a> in homes in Methil, led by SGN and dubbed H100 Fife<\/a>, has cost taxpayers \u00a325million despite fears it is doomed to failure. Experts say intense lobbying by fossil fuel<\/a> interests have led successive governments to throw public money after hydrogen schemes.<\/p>\n Professor Tom Baxter, of Strathclyde University, said: \u201cThe power of vested interest lobbying has seduced \u00adpolicymakers into wrongly thinking of hydrogen as a natural route to net zero.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cOne of my big frustrations has been the gullibility of politicians. In Aberdeen<\/a>, although I\u2019ve been a really big critic, I think they did it with the best of intentions.<\/p>\n \u201cThey were hearing all about how they\u2019d be using the same skills learned in the North Sea<\/a> \u00adindustries. It\u2019s a sector that has many similarities to natural gas.\u201d<\/p>\n Hydrogen expert Prof Tom Baxter(Image: UGC)<\/p>\n He added: \u201cBefore the public purse is used for this stuff, there should be proper independent due diligence done on it. Is this value for money? Has it got a credible outcome that could benefit UK or Scottish taxpayers. That seems to have been missing.\u201d<\/p>\n SNP ministers<\/a> previously announced plans to invest \u00a3100million in hydrogen schemes as part of its plans to tackle the climate crisis. The Scottish Government<\/a> confirmed in 2020 it had earmarked \u00a340million for hydrogen buses, other heavy \u00advehicles and refuelling.<\/p>\n Between 2022 and 2025, it spent a further \u00a37.3million on Aberdeen\u2019s<\/a> scheme, while it splashed \u00a36.9million on the H100 hydrogen homes project. UK energy regulator Ofgem<\/a> has spent a further \u00a318million on H100.<\/p>\n Last year, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband<\/a> pledged a further \u00a3500million to create the UK\u2019s \u201cfirst regional hydrogen transport and storage network\u201d. Professor Baxter said the total cost of hydrogen projects could already run into the \u201cbillions\u201d for UK taxpayers.<\/p>\n In 2022, we told how Bamford\u2019s Wrightbus<\/a> was behind the world\u2019s first double-decker powered by the gas, with the firm winning multi-million pound publicly funded contracts to supply vehicles across the UK.<\/p>\n Jo Bamford. (Image: Liam McBurney\/PA)<\/p>\n In the years since, cities with hydrogen bus fleets like London, Belfast, Birmingham and Liverpool have faced operational difficulties<\/a> or dropped the schemes.<\/p>\n A Glasgow scheme for hydrogen-powered bin trucks was also abandoned. Professor David Cebon, of the University of Cambridge, said: \u201cHydrogen bus projects have been failing around the world<\/a> for five years. Ten years ago, it was clear hydrogen buses were a bad idea.<\/p>\n “The basic numbers around hydrogen buses tell you that. These hydrogen buses are at least double the cost of electric buses in capital cost, and they\u2019re at least three times the cost of electric buses to run.<\/p>\n \u201cThese projects tend to run on gray hydrogen \u2013 produced via natural gas<\/a> \u2013 meaning their carbon emissions are worse than if they were running on diesel. They\u2019re incredibly expensive and propped up by taxpayers.\u201d<\/p>\n On using hydrogen to heat homes, he added: \u201cThat\u2019s even worse, from an energy<\/a> point of view. It takes six times more energy to heat a home using hydrogen than it does with a heat pump. Hydrogen makes zero sense for heating homes.\u201d<\/p>\n Professor Baxter said hydrogen homes had \u201cnever been viable\u201d because the gas is more expensive than natural gas and electricity.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cWho is advising the \u00adScottish Government<\/a> the H100 trial is a good use of the public purse when there\u2019s a barrage of evidence saying hydrogen use in residential property will put people into fuel poverty?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s just a wrong-headed idea.\u201d The Bamford family has given \u00a310million in cash and gifts to the Tories since 2001. When he was prime minister, Boris Johnson used a Bamford-registered helicopter on a flight to Wolverhampton from London.<\/p>\n Ex-Tory transport minister George Freeman was forced to apologise and hand back money paid to him by Ryze Hydrogen,<\/a> another Bamford-owned firm, for \u201cstrategic advice\u201d in 2020. Click HERE<\/a><\/p>\n The wider hydrogen strategy in Aberdeen<\/a> was a partnership between the city council and oil giant BP.<\/p>\n Professor Cebon said: \u201cBamford is certainly very influential in the hydrogen lobby. Governments should make their decisions based on \u00adobjective information and scientific evidence, not on lobbying from the likes of Bamford or the gas networks.\u201d<\/p>\n Typically, the fuel source used to create hydrogen is natural gas, although emerging technologies to produce the gas through renewable electricity \u2013 known as \u201cgreen hydrogen\u201d \u2013 are developing.<\/p>\n Campaigners have long been wary of the hydrogen lobby as being too close to oil and gas interests.<\/p>\n Scottish Greens energy spokesman Patrick Harvie said: \u201cThe focus on hydrogen for heating homes has been costly, ineffective and unnecessary.
