A suspect in the murder of Derry woman Amy Doherty was arrested after falling from the Foyle Bridge on the outskirts of the city.<\/p>\n

It is understood the 30-year-old fell from the bridge, which rises to more than 100ft, on Saturday morning, sparking a major police and rescue operation.<\/p>\n

A mother-of-two, Ms Doherty was found at a house in the Summer Meadows Mews area of Derry at around 10.20am on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The young woman, who was aged in her 20s, died later in hospital. <\/p>\n

At around 4.30pm on Saturday police confirmed a murder investigation had been launched and that a 30-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder.<\/p>\n

It is understood the man was rescued from the fast-flowing river by members of the Fire Service before being taken to shore.<\/p>\n

He was then transferred to an ambulance and was later arrested.<\/p>\n

Opened in 1984, at its peak height the Foyle Bridge is more than 100ft above the deep waters below.<\/p>\n

At around 11.30am on Saturday morning police released a statement saying the Foyle Bridge was closed in both directions \u201cdue to a concern for safety\u201d, while road users were asked to avoid the area. <\/p>\n

Approximately 60 minutes later, motorists were advised that all lanes of the bridge were reopened with the exception of one city-bound lane which remains closed.\u200b<\/p>\n

The bridge was fully reopened on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Tributes have been paid to Ms Doherty on social media.<\/p>\n

Friend Davina \u00d3 Ceallaigh described her as \u201dthe most beautiful girl, with the biggest heart, forever making me laugh”.<\/p>\n

Another tribute read: \u201cHeart is broken Amy Doherty you were such a sweetheart and proud to call a friend love you loads gone too soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

A tribute from her employers, NWCare said: \u201cThe Management and staff of NWCare are devastated to learn about the unexpected passing of Amy, one of our much loved and exceptional staff, under such tragic circumstances.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmy was the essence of humanity, kind, compassionate and beautiful.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with her family and children at this very sad and difficult time. From all her colleagues and friends at NWCare.\u201d<\/p>\n

SDLP assembly member Mark H Durkan new of the murder is \u201cheartbreaking and deeply distressing news for our city\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe death of a young woman in such circumstances has left people right across Derry shocked and saddened,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy thoughts are first and foremost with her family and friends, who are now facing this unimaginable loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sinn F\u00e9in MLA Ciara Ferguson said there was \u201cshock and devastation across the city\u201d.<\/p>\n
