{"id":490457,"date":"2026-03-23T06:13:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T06:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/490457\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T06:13:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T06:13:09","slug":"un-issues-new-climate-warning-as-el-nino-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/490457\/","title":{"rendered":"UN issues new climate warning as El Ni\u00f1o looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Some of the extra energy trapped by these gases warms the atmosphere and the land, as well as melting the planet&#8217;s ice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The world&#8217;s glaciers had one of their five worst years on record in 2024\/25, according to provisional data, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvgeydkz08go\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sea ice at both poles<\/a> was at or near record lows throughout most of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But more than 90% of the Earth&#8217;s extra energy heats the oceans, which in turn harms marine life, drives more intense storms and contributes to sea-level rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The heat stored in the upper 2km (1.2 miles) of the global ocean reached a new high last year, the WMO says. Over the past two decades, it has been warming more than twice as quickly as during the late 20th Century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Human activities are increasingly disrupting the natural equilibrium and we will live with these consequences for hundreds and thousands of years,&#8221; said Prof Celeste Saulo, secretary general of the WMO.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The report points to the impacts of rising temperatures today, which are helping to intensify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cy4dgp1p3p1o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">many types of extreme weather<\/a> and aiding the spread of diseases such as dengue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The south-west US is currently in the midst of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cj40xgv5vpdo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a record-breaking early-season heatwave<\/a>, with temperatures exceeding 40C in places over recent days \u2013 about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/weather\/videos\/cy01rlvke0lo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10-15C above average<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Rapid analysis by scientists at the World Weather Attribution group on Friday found that intensity of heat would have been &#8220;virtually impossible&#8221; without human-caused climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Researchers are also closely watching the Pacific Ocean, with long-term forecasts strongly suggesting that a warming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cj97npgk92po\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">El Ni\u00f1o phase<\/a> could form in the second half of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An El Ni\u00f1o &#8211; on top of the background human-caused warming trend &#8211; could push temperatures to new heights into 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;If we transition to El Ni\u00f1o we will see an increase in global temperature again, and potentially to new records&#8221; said Dr John Kennedy of the WMO.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Some of the extra energy trapped by these gases warms the atmosphere and the land, as well as&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":490458,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[49,50,51,47,52,48],"class_list":{"0":"post-490457","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-headlines","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-top-news","11":"tag-top-stories","12":"tag-topnews","13":"tag-topstories"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/490457","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=490457"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/490457\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/490458"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=490457"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=490457"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=490457"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
