John Fury, the father of Tyson Fury<\/a>, is one of the most outspoken figures in boxing. While his own career never hit the same heights as his son, John amassed a 13-fight resume in the ring, going 8-4 with one draw.<\/p>\n

The elder Fury presents himself as the ultimate hard man, frequently reminding anyone who will listen that he has never backed down from a challenge. To listen to the 60-year-old talk about his fighting ability, it would be easy to assume that he’d had a glittering professional career.<\/p>\n

Despite having plenty to say about his son’s career and going viral for challenging various British boxing legends, including Tony Bellew and Carl Froch, John hasn’t fought professionally for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n

Even when he was active, ‘Big John’ was hardly a world-class operator. In fact, the one time that he fought a fighter of top-level calibre, Fury suffered a knockout defeat so devastating that he didn’t enter the ring again for nearly four years.<\/p>\n

In what (to date) stands as the penultimate fight of his career, John went head-to-head with former WBO heavyweight champion Henry Akinwande at the G-Mex Centre in Manchester in October 1991.<\/p>\n

The gulf in class between the pair became crystal clear in the third round of the contest. As Fury dropped his guard, Akinwande caught with a huge right hand, sending him directly to the canvas.<\/p>\n

No count was necessary as John had no chance of making it back to his feet. Concerning scenes unfolded in the immediate aftermath of the punch, Fury appeared to have no idea where he was as the referee waved the bout off.<\/p>\n

John would not return to the ring until June 1995, when he was knocked out again. His fourth-round knockout loss to Steve Garber remains the most recent fight on his resume.<\/p>\n

Realistically, that is likely to remain the case, too, even though Fury is always keen to hype a comeback. In recent times, John has been vocal about not wanting his son Tyson to step back between the ropes, arguing that ‘The Gypsy King’ is ‘finished’ as a fighter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While the younger Fury has lost two fights (both to Oleksandr Usyk), he has never been knocked out.
