Newcastle<\/a> may be in favour of the new rules, but they will still be well behind on spending power.<\/p>\n

Analysis by Swiss Ramble, external<\/a> shows that, based on the 2023-24 accounts, the Magpies’ SCR budget ranked ninth (\u00a3243m) in the Premier League.<\/p>\n

Compare that with the big six: Manchester United<\/a> (\u00a3597m), Manchester City<\/a> (\u00a3580m), Arsenal<\/a> and Liverpool<\/a> (\u00a3449m), Chelsea<\/a> (\u00a3407m) and Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> (\u00a3397m).<\/p>\n

Unless Newcastle<\/a> generate higher income, the status quo will always be able to spend more, paying higher wages.<\/p>\n

“Look at Newcastle<\/a>‘s wages of \u00a3220m [in 2023-24],” Maguire added. “It’s \u00a3100m less than Arsenal<\/a> and Chelsea<\/a>. And it was \u00a3200m less than Manchester City<\/a>. So that is the problem.<\/p>\n

“The desire to narrow the gap is a challenge. Football is a talent game. Talent follows the money in terms of both recruitment and wages – and it makes it difficult for Newcastle<\/a> to make that step up.”<\/p>\n

Newcastle<\/a> face a battle to qualify for Europe – but not making it could be a positive. <\/p>\n

Uefa’s SCR system limits clubs in European competition to spending 70% of their income.<\/p>\n

A club not in Europe would be able to go to 85% or above under the Premier League rules, designed to give teams not in continental competition some extra space to compete.<\/p>\n

To show the impact by analysing the 2023-24 figures, West Ham<\/a> (\u00a3267m) and Brighton<\/a> (\u00a3276m) would have had bigger budgets than Newcastle<\/a>, had these rules been in place.<\/p>\n

And this is further underlined by another quirk which means being in the Conference League could be the worst thing financially.<\/p>\n

The winners of the competition only earn about \u00a320m, yet must work to the 70% rule. The difference between 70% and 85%, based on the 2023-24 figures? At least \u00a333m less to spend.<\/p>\n

Newcastle<\/a> would prefer the riches of the Champions League, though even that competition further entrenches the position of the biggest clubs.<\/p>\n

Uefa gives bonus payments under the ‘value pillar’, partly based on a club’s coefficient. It rewards historical success.<\/p>\n

For this season’s league phase, Swiss Ramble calculated, external<\/a> that Newcastle<\/a> received \u00a347m. But Arsenal<\/a>, Chelsea<\/a>, Liverpool<\/a> and Manchester City<\/a> were all paid in excess of \u00a379m. <\/p>\n
