Radiohead<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Ed O\u2019Brien<\/a>\u00a0has confirmed that\u00a0Thom Yorke<\/a>\u00a0will be releasing a solo album later this year.<\/p>\n

Last week,\u00a0guitarist O\u2019Brien announced his own new solo record, \u2018Blue Morpho\u2019<\/a>, a seven-song project that will be his second solo album and\u00a0the\u00a0first under his own name.\u00a0His debut LP \u2018Earth<\/a>\u2019 was released in 2020 under the\u00a0moniker\u00a0EOB.<\/p>\n

\u2018Blue Morpho\u2019 will be released on May 22 via O\u2019Brien\u2019s new label Transgressive and you can pre-order\/pre-save it\u00a0here<\/a>. Check out the title track below.<\/p>\n

Now, O\u2019Brien has revealed that he is not the only Radiohead member releasing a solo project this year,\u00a0telling\u00a0Consequence<\/a>\u00a0that a Yorke solo album is \u201ccoming out later in the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s so lovely is it feels they both can coexist,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Radiohead thing can go out and tour \u2013 and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0the mothership, I guess, for all of us. But\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0got these little satellites.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, there\u2019s\u00a0The Smile<\/a>, and there\u2019s \u2013 Thom\u2019s got a solo album\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0going to come out later in the year, I think. And\u00a0Jonny<\/a>\u2019s got his stuff, and you know,\u00a0Philip [Selway]<\/a>\u2019s got his stuff, and Colin [Greenwood]\u2019s playing with\u00a0Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yorke has released three solo albums to date, most recently 2019\u2019s \u2018Anima<\/a>\u2019, which was accompanied by a short film<\/a>\u00a0directed by recent\u00a0Oscar<\/a>\u00a0winner\u00a0Paul Thomas Anderson<\/a>. Last year, he also released \u2018Tall Tales<\/a>\u2019,\u00a0a collaborative album with Mark Pritchard,\u00a0and he\u00a0recorded the soundtrack for the film\u00a0Confidenza<\/a>\u00a0in 2024. The Smile, meanwhile, released their third album \u2018Cutouts<\/a>\u2019 in the same year.<\/p>\n

\u2018Blue Morpho\u2019,\u00a0meanwhile, has been produced by\u00a0Paul Epworth<\/a>\u00a0(Paul McCartney<\/a>, Adele<\/a>, Florence + The Machine<\/a>), and it emerged from \u201cone of the most challenging periods\u201d of O\u2019Brien\u2019s life, and finds him \u201cbeginning anew, finally starting to figure out his approach\u201d. It is said to contain elements of \u201chypnotic psych-folk\u201d and \u201cbeguiling trip-hop\u201d, as well as boasting some \u201cradiant guitars\u201d and \u201cluminous stillness\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

An accompanying short film,\u00a0Blue Morpho: The Three Act Play, is also being released after premiering at\u00a0SXSW<\/a>\u00a0yesterday (Monday March 16). More information on this will\u00a0follow\u00a0at a later date. See the trailer below.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien also recently revealed that Radiohead have plans to hit the road in 2027 and beyond<\/a>, following on from\u00a0their UK and European run late last year<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cWhat\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going to do is, every year\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going to do a different continent, and\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going to do 20 shows each year. No more, no less,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0do anything this year, but\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0do something next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

All five members of Radiohead formed a new private limited company last month<\/a>, suggesting that the band were planning something\u00a0in the near future. Their latest full-length record,\u00a0\u2018A Moon Shaped Pool\u2019<\/a>, was released in 2016.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0a glowing, five-star review<\/a> of one of Radiohead\u2019s gigs in London last November, NME\u00a0wrote: \u201cWhat a show: a visceral energy, a tasteful spectacle, all delivered with a generosity of spirit, Yorke in full rockstar mode as the band trade places to tend to each corner of the venue.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor a band once embarrassed by the notion of \u2018arena rock\u2019,\u00a0nobody does it better.
