{"id":493174,"date":"2026-03-24T19:58:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T19:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/493174\/"},"modified":"2026-03-24T19:58:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T19:58:17","slug":"protect-men-and-boys-from-manosphere-influencers-labour-mps-tell-ofcom-internet-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/493174\/","title":{"rendered":"Protect men and boys from manosphere influencers, Labour MPs tell Ofcom | Internet safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Men and boys need as much protection as women and girls from harmful influencers and \u201cthe worst parts of the internet\u201d, a group of MPs have told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/ofcom\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> as they called for the regulator to give specific guidance to online platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More than 60 Labour MPs have written to the Ofcom chief executive, Melanie Dawes, urging her to protect men and boys from \u201cmanosphere\u201d influencers who may expose them to gambling, sextortion and violent pornography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Online Safety Act forced Ofcom to give <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/online-safety\/illegal-and-harmful-content\/a-safer-life-online-for-women-and-girls\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tech platforms guidance<\/a> on how to tackle \u201charmful content and activity that disproportionately affects women and girls\u201d, but MPs argued that men and boys are also targeted in specific ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to the Gambling Commission, 53% of 11- to 17-year-old boys <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk\/report\/young-people-and-gambling-2025-official-statistics\/ypg-2025-young-peoples-exposure-to-gambling-frequency-of-seeing-or-hearing\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">see gambling adverts online each week<\/a>, compared with 31% of their female peers, while 91% of sextortion victims <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwf.org.uk\/news-media\/news\/teenage-boys-targeted-as-hotline-sees-heartbreaking-increase-in-child-sextortion-reports\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are male<\/a>, according to the Internet Watch Foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Alistair Strathern, the MP for Hitchin and a co-chair of the Labour group for men and boys, said the Louis Theroux documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2026\/mar\/11\/louis-theroux-inside-the-manosphere-review-why-doesnt-he-focus-more-on-the-impact-on-women\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Inside the Manosphere<\/a> was \u201canother reminder of a particular way some of the worst of the internet can prey on young men and boys\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The documentary revealed how some manosphere influencers were exploiting young men \u201cby peddling lies, falsehoods and hate\u201d, said Nick Isles, the director of the Centre for Policy Research on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/men\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Men<\/a> and Boys, which has contacted Ofcom to call for tech companies to be given guidance on the specific risks facing men and boys online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThese [influencers] may be lost souls but the people they affect are not,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is these young boys and men that we need to do more to protect by using our existing laws to prosecute hate speech, by creating new legislation where needed and through the tax system to confiscate moneys earned through activity which harms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Strathern said MPs were not looking for \u201cequity for the sake of it\u201d but he said violence against women and girls could not be tackled if the specific harms faced by men and boys were not also addressed as they were \u201canother aspect of the same problems\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThese harms are not just done to men and boys,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a harm that impacts the women and girls in their life too. We are all losing out as a result of the failure to protect men and boys from some of the risks they face in the online world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The letter to Dawes says men and boys are at \u201cdisproportionate risk of specific harms including far-right political radicalisation, crypto scams and violent pornography through content by popular creators\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While they are exposed to harmful content including misinformation and disinformation, pornography and misogynist content at a similar rate to women and girls, the \u201ccontent targeted at a male audience is likely to be different, and platforms might need to take different steps to understand and tackle the problem,\u201d it states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Strathern said Ofcom needed to \u201cstep up\u201d and do more to tackle gendered online harms. \u201cI think that the challenge to them is to show they\u2019re taking this seriously,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen there is clear evidence around the gendered aspects of harms affecting boys and men, as well as women and girls, and their job is to keep all of us safe on the internet, we think there\u2019s a gap that they need to step up and act on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">An Ofcom spokesperson said protections in place under the Online Safety Act were designed to benefit anyone experiencing online abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe also know that exposure to harmful online content can negatively affect boys, which is why our codes require services to protect them from being exposed to pornographic, hateful and abusive content,\u201d they said. \u201cOur guidance encourages tech companies to use educational and preventive approaches that help reduce online abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Men and boys need as much protection as women and girls from harmful influencers and \u201cthe worst parts&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":493175,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[49,50,51,47,52,48],"class_list":{"0":"post-493174","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-headlines","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-top-news","11":"tag-top-stories","12":"tag-topnews","13":"tag-topstories"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/493174","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=493174"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/493174\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/493175"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=493174"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=493174"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=493174"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
